In a new report, economic stress accounted for half of a steep decline in happiness among Canadian youth and housing affordability was the biggest factor in that, writes the @globeandmail Editorial Board. While it’s good that the governmentofcanada and the @ongov have worked together to reduce development charges, the Editorial Board argues that all levels of governments also need to make it easier to build, by reducing red tape, making it simple and straightforward to get permits, and by changing zoning rules to allow more types of homes. The @cmhc_schl is changing its monthly housing starts report to add earlier indicators of homebuilding activity in an attempt to better reflect market sentiment. “If we’re getting building permit and preconstruction sales considered in [the CMHC] forecasts, that’s going to improve things,” said BILD’s Chief Operating Officer, Justin Sherwood, in this piece by @globeandmail . This afternoon, BILD President and CEO Dave Wilkes addressed the @lao_english Standing Committee on Heritage, Infrastructure and Cultural Policy, speaking in support of the proposed Bill 98, the Building Homes and Improving Transportation Infrastructure Act, 2026. The @ongov continues to show its commitment to assist in alleviating the province's housing supply crisis. Bill 98 was proposed on the heels of the provincial and federal governments' move to remove HST on all new homes under $1 million, and reduce the tax for those under $1.85 million. Now with the proposals in Bill 98 that aim to streamline approvals and bring greater consistency and clarity to the approvals process, combined with previous housing-related legislation, the government has created the conditions to accelerate housing supply and return the sector to a position of growth.

Today marks a significant step forward for housing delivery in the @cityofvaughan . On April 28, council ratified two major initiatives aimed at supporting residential development:
· A time-limited exemption of development charges (DCs) for shovel-ready residential projects from Feb. 25, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027, and
· A 25% reduction in DCs alongside targeted deferrals and full fee relief for purpose-built rental and non-luxury market rental housing until Oct. 31, 2027.
These measures build on earlier actions, including the continuation of Vaughan’s Nov. 2024 DC rate reduction and deferral policy, until a new by-law is enacted.
BILD commends Mayor @stevendelduca , Deputy Mayor @reallindajackson , council members, and city staff for their leadership and willingness to take bold, collaborative action. At a time of economic uncertainty, policies like these are critical to support unlocking supply and advancing much-needed housing.
We look forward to continuing to work with the city as partners in community building. Read the city’s news release at the link in our bio.
