I’ll be back, singing love songs live from the back of a saloon, @themontrosesaloon , one week from today, for the International Pop Overthrow, a bash that comes back here, just once a year. Hopes are high that the room will be filled from the front to the back, and you’ll hear songs from the top of the pops all the way down to the bottom of Bach’s. Speaking of which, my set tops off at 9:45 PM. And no fronting when I say that I’m looking forward to it and will likely look back on it afterwards with fondness. That’s all, thanks.

The phrase the “LA sound” has meant a lot of things over the past six decades. Some people associate it with all sorts of things, but to me it will always be the sound of The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Jan & Dean, The Byrds, Love, and Kim Fowley. After a few decades of sedated trends, Los Angeles hasn’t felt more alive and diversified than it does right now (see the sights of Uni Boys, Dorothy Fuzz, Billy Tibbals, Alley Girl, Quad Super Six, Tim Presley, etc.). And somehow, a red-headed young man named Tom Henry born in the burbs of Chicago, knows this sound inside out. While he’s only spent a couple years living and playing in LA, he captures the city’s analog warmth with an overdose of spirit on his debut LP Songs to Sing and Dance To. From the mind-bending opener “Close Your Eyes” to the sunset-soaked “The Mountains,” Henry bends AM pop and pure rock ‘n’ roll impulses into something personal and present. But all too rarely, something comes along that hits a nerve. Scholarly pop-mania. Someday, Tom Henry will be a star, but only if both the mainstream and underground accepts him.
We caught up with Henry to talk all about the making of the album, returning home to Chicago this past summer, and what it means to write music for a world that still needs something to believe in.
Songs to Sing and Dance To is out now on @royaloakie Records. Read the full interview about our Album of the Year pick at the link in bio.
I regret to announce that my show tonight in Vancouver BC will be the last of my summer tour. I’m sad to step back from this dream of bringing my songs to you but I’ve been dealing with some personal, mental health related issues that require me to go home and seek guidance. I appreciate your patience and thank you for respecting my privacy. If anyone has purchased tickets in a town I’ve yet to play, we’ll get those refunded. I’m encouraging the supporting bands to still play some of those shows (sans-me), so stay tuned with them cause they are the best acts around. Last but not least, to the powerpop fans of my record listening all over the world, I believe that someday we could be goin’ steady once again.
Forever yours,
TH
