In early 2024, we were called to Ladakh to make a film about the first ever Ice Hockey League in India. A lot of people were interviewed & one common thing emerged: how the resilience of the Ladakhi community kept this sport alive, creating some of the best players in the country. Like in most places, the women had to push harder to claim their space. We heard stories of how the women’s ice hockey team grew with the support of local heroes. Stories of women who wouldn’t give up despite the lack of basics like skates. It feels important to say this now. Communities survive when people stand up for each other. Ladakh has always shown us this. We felt it while we were there. Lifting each other up is the only way forward. We started African Music Exploration as a deep dive into five decades of African music—rooted in our radio days, but slightly reimagined for the club. The idea was always to bring these rhythms and grooves to the dancefloor, while still offering something fresh for listeners to discover. Over the past couple of years, we’ve hosted incredible DJs—both from across Africa and beyond— to share the decks with us. It all came together at our Magnetic Fields showcase last December. We’re grateful for the support and opportunity by the team behind Mag Fields to trust us to do us. We took over the Dungeon to spotlight some of the most forward-thinking and underrepresented sounds from the African continent. We also wanted to showcase what we imagine as a ‘Focus Group Sound System’ sound blurring the boundaries between the weird and wonderful. For our showcase we also invited the incredible @poly_ritmo to join us who played such a stellar set. Alongside the music, we also dropped exclusive merch in collaboration with Magnetic Fields—our first ever. We invited a small crew of filmmakers @nayidillise and @better_human to document our time at the festival with Poly-Ritmo. The goal was to capture everything we’d built up to that point, and mark the beginning of a new chapter for African Music Exploration—and by extension, Focus Group Radio.
