Learning how to show up for others has been an ongoing lesson for me.
Work has taught me a lot about it. Life has too.
Thereās something powerful that happens when we show up well for each other.
When we encourage, support, hold steady, we remind people of their brilliance, and remind them theyāre not alone in it.
Thatās what I feel drawn to, in life and in work.
I want to come alongside the brave ones.
The ones building things.
The ones carrying responsibility.
The ones on their path, but holding more than most people realise.
Thatās why Iāve created Sorted.
A steady place to think things through.
Clarity under pressure.
If youāre building something, and carrying a lot, or just trying to figure shit out, Iād love to help.

Two queer ex-church kids found the same new tribe.
Sam was in community theatre when his church gave him the ultimatum.
Aaron started musical theatre right before he came out and was kicked out of his church.
There are new communities out there. A choir. A team. A class. A group chat. Anywhere people will see you and celebrate you for who you already are.
Which ones are you being led to?
Episode 2 out now. Samās full story.

Sam left this church because they wouldnāt accept him.
Years later, he found out that he was the catalyst for change.
The day before his birthday, he listened to the episode where his old pastor told the world sheād been wrong. He had no idea his story had reached them. No idea Gateway had become fully affirming.
The change wasnāt for him. It was because of him.
This is what real change looks like. Samās full story is on the podcast now.

A common phrase in churches is: āCome as you are.ā
What it actually means: You are welcome here!Ā But, if you want to stay, youāre going to have to change.Ā
Samās pastor literally said it on our podcast last season: āCome as you are. But donāt stay as you are.āĀ
Itās the welcoming-but-not-affirming trap. And it still hurts the people it claims to love.
Episode 2 out now. Samās full story.

Coming out, especially in environments that arenāt affirming or accepting of lgbtq+ people needs to be done carefully and on your own terms.Ā
The pain of being outed is severe.
Trusting anyone again is hard.
Sam found out his church knew he was gay from a youth leader over coffee.

Some of us didnāt know what happened to us was in fact traumatic, until someone outside our world named it.
Sam grew up in church. Then he came out. Then his pastor pulled him into a dinner and gave him an ultimatum. He didnāt realise how badly that had hurt him until his therapist said one sentence: āIām so sorry that happened to you.ā
Season 2, Episode 2 is out now. Samās full story.
Listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Samās pastor invited him over for a roast chicken dinner. Then told him he was welcome, but here are the conditions.
The dinner was lovely, the message was hard to hear, the impact was long lasting.

This oneās for the kid in the back row of church right now, scared to tell anyone.
And for the friend, the parent, the leader who could be the first safe person they tell.
If thatās you, lean in. Learn the language. Listen. Become someone they can come to.
Because a lot of us didnāt have that. And the ones who do make it through usually had one person.
Be that one person. š¤

You see the streets blocked off.
You see it on the news.
You wonder why itās such a big thing every year.
Then the parade starts.
And the Dykes on Bikes lead it. Like they always do.
Behind them, the 78ers. The people who marched in 1978 and were beaten and arrested for it.
Some of them are still alive.
Some of them are in that parade.
Thatās why itās televised.
Thatās why itās funded.
Thatās why we shut down the streets.
Because for one day a year, the people who fought for our right to exist get to lead, and the rest of us get to say thank you.
When you put it that way, one day doesnāt feel like enough.

We have a couple of fellow storytellers who share a similar story on @theopentable this Wednesday. @craigmbrown will be chatting to Aaron Kelly @psaaronkelly and Ben Nicholson @bennynicholson from the @queerfully.made podcast who will be chatting about what the intersection between spirituality and queerness looked like for them.
Join Craig, Ethan (@bepsi.bad ) this Wednesday on @joy949 at 7pm.
