“Completed in 2025, the ADU shares an access door with the main house, but maintains self-sufficiency and privacy both spatially and from the curved wall that shields the dwelling from the cul-de-sac.
Constructed with grey concrete masonry units (CMU) as both the exterior and interior finished material, the accessory dwelling unit (ADU) draws inspiration from studio founder Benjamin Hall’s childhood memories of travelling through the Southwest US with his father.”

The Suite Life 🛌
Designing a home for someone can be a long road,” the architect Benjamin Hall says. “You spend a lot of time with the client, talking about what they want from their home. It helps if you really like them.”
Hall had previously worked with—and already “really liked”—the couple who wanted a primary suite grafted onto their midcentury Willo home. They were after an indoor-outdoor space that accommodated both their busy lives as parents and their work as physical therapists.

We’re thrilled to share a new project currently underway: the transformation of a modest carport into a screened-in garage, thoughtfully designed with an attached home office and lounge. Nestled deep within the vibrant desert landscape, this project harmonizes functionality with its natural surroundings, creating a serene and versatile retreat.

The absence of street presence becomes an opportunity: a retreat tucked behind a suburban home, discovered rather than displayed. Residents find belonging in its intimacy and rarity. Spatial efficiency shapes the one-bedroom units, while their collective arrangement fosters community, balancing privacy with proximity. In challenging suburban norms, the design embeds density and connection within a fabric often marked by isolation. Modest scale, hidden siting, and elemental form converge to create a dwelling that is both secret and essential.

This urban infill development in Downtown Phoenix was conceived to optimize the site’s buildable footprint and introduce a six-unit micro-apartment complex. At the time of its construction, micro-living had yet to be explored in the region. The concept drew inspiration from Benjamin’s experience living in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the emphasis lies in the quality rather than the quantity of living space.

Located in the Moon Valley community of Phoenix, Arizona, this unique residence serves as a compelling case study in generational housing. Situated on a modest suburban lot, the property offered just enough usable space to add a second home in the form of an attached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU).
