When Alfie arrived, Stephie and I wanted to honour a tiny Hamburg tradition; throwing his umbilical cord into the water. The story goes that some parents cast it into the Alster, to keep a lifelong connection to the heart of the city, while others choose the Elbe, to send their child’s first tie out into the wider world.
