Some actors build characters through imagination. Ben Hardy @benhardy isn’t one of them. He’s worn superhero suits, faced demonic forces, and stood shoulder to shoulder with some of the industry’s biggest names, never conjuring fantasies. Instead, he’s dedicated to finding the human in the supernatural. It’s an ongoing challenge. In The Conjuring: Last Rites, the feat is immense. Ben joins the iconic horror franchise in one of its most anticipated iterations: the end of the original’s cast story. We sit down with Ben to discuss the elation of “going there,” coffee break jump scares and the joys of the horror genre.

For our new issue, the star of #TheConjuringLastRites and #XMenApocalypse tells us about the immersive experience of working with very realistic ghouls and demons in @TheConjuring , the importance of variety throughout his career, and a growing love for @cartier and @piaget watches.
“I always think of horror more as escapism,” Hardy says.
“It’s so engaging, and it brings us so much into our primitive state of survival: fight or flight.
The adrenaline can really be flowing through your body during a horror movie which is why I think a lot of people don’t like it because it makes them feel too engaged with that primordial self when they just want to relax.
But I think a lot of films are about engaging with those primal emotions, and horror captures that and really has the power to transport you and take you out of your everyday life and keep you on the edge of your seat.”
