At the read through of this project, Emma Thompson warned the room ‘some people will be very angry about this’. We all cheered.
It makes me all the more delighted that so many people are connecting with what we’re doing here. Paying homage to Austen’s feminism, her love for all types of woman, her biting social commentary and yes her absolute acknowledgement of the patriarchy and how it limits the way women can use their love.
The second picture is a coloured etching from 1820 called ‘Love a La Mode or ‘Two Dear Friends’’. Lady Strachan and Lady Warwick getting amorous on a bench as their husbands look on. One of the women exclaims ‘Little does he know he has a female rival!’ The men are obvs feeewwwming.
And the very last slide illustrates Emma’s initial point beautifully. I must confess, dear reader, to have felt impishly thrilled at having blown the wind up a few skirts.
