Every now and then I have days when social media really gets on my nerves. On three occasions today I had to defend my latest post from accusations and criticism, ranging from āThereās no water at this spot! Whereās the fencing in front of this barn?! This is AI!ā or āThis barn is so overdone, find another place to photograph! šā
Iām tired of it. I really am tired of being accused of using AI to fake my work, or photoshop to create composites simply because the āexpertā thatās ābeen there beforeā or āstood in that spotā hasnāt ever seen it how I was able to photograph it. Or not even knowing that there are a few barns on Mormon Row rather than just the one they happened upon and claim the barn in their photo is the āreal oneā and that my one exposure photo is fake. Just because you havenāt personally seen the scene as I captured it, does that mean it doesnāt or didnāt exist? And this is one of my favorites - āI have been visiting for years, that view doesnāt exist! Wonderful fake photo!ā And my response is just that they need to revisit and explore the area more, because itās unfortunate theyāve not experienced that view for themselves. Capturing and experiencing these places in conditions and aspects you havenāt ever seen before is why I do what I do. Itās a rarity, and I live for it.
The world has become so accusatory and closed minded that a simple photo of a historic barn in front of the most majestic mountainscape in the country triggers anger from people. They feel the need to knock someone down who rose before sunrise to see and experience exactly what they think doesnāt exist, simply because they havenāt seen it with their own eyes. What is it, is it jealousy? Is it the constant need to prove someone wrong?
And Iām going to keep photographing and posting photos of the barns. As Iāve said before, Iāll never see them in the same light, weather conditions, or mood again. Maybe only a photographer can understand why that matters.
And yes, the dirt road in this photo with this view does indeed exist.
