Please come to the opening of @stevendufala and my new show at @fleisherollman tonight from 6–8. It’s all new work, and maybe it’s because we’re getting older, but being able to come together and make things with my brother is something I never want to take for granted. It’s one of the most amazingly special things in life—to have that kind of close dialogue, trust, and encouragement from a sibling and partner in crime. We made each other laugh a lot and had fun. At times, things got super dark as we slogged through themes—why we make the work we make and what inspires it. But we also felt excited and hopeful, and were able to try out new ideas while revisiting older concepts and approaches. Come join us for the opening, or visit through May. We’ll do a talk at some point, and I’ll post about it here!

How can we make sense of waste as art? Join us for a panel discussion on June 28 at 1PM with Billy Dufala, one of the featured artists in ‘Slow Motion’, whose sculpture ‘Future Futures’ is both a public sculpture and a material commodity. ‘Future Futures’ is made of thirty-six bales of aluminum scraps, all of which were diverted from landfills by human hands for future use and were staged at GFS for viewers to draw connections between the artwork and everyday life and reflect on extractive economies and practices. This upcoming program will feature an artist, anthropologist, and historian to highlight the multiple possibilities and perspectives for decoding ‘Future Futures’ and will be moderated by Patricia Eunji Kim, curator of ‘Slow Motion.’ This event is free with admission to Grounds For Sculpture and guests can register at the link in bio. Members are also welcome to attend a post-talk social in the West Gallery to meet the artist and curator. #groundsforsculpture #slowmotion #artisttalk #monumentlab

If you happen to be in Wisconsin over the holidays swing by @jmkac and check out: /exhibition/workplace/ The exhibit will be open until Jan. 19th These pictures give you a taste of the 'Iron Side' of the exhibit. The 'Clay Side' pictures with a better description was posted about a dozen before this. We had a great time putting this together and are grateful for all the connections created between the Arts & Industry Residency, Kohler Co. Associates(workers) and the Art Center!

Computer, enhance 🔍📸 Check out the details of ‘Future Futures’ by Billy Dufala, part of our exhibition ‘Slow Motion’, guest curated by Monument Lab. Dufala, who is also the Creative Director for RAIR Philly (Recycled Artists in Residency), embraces humor and playfulness in his work, which often focuses conversations about sustainability. Inspired by the commodities crash of 2014-2015 and the pileup of materials at recycling centers, this sculpture is made from stacking 36 bales of compressed recycled aluminum. When the exhibition ends the artist will sell these bales back to the commodities market, using the funds to support future projects. Through ‘Future Futures,’ Dufala shows these materials have value beyond their disposal and points to a new way of working within a growing waste economy.  ‘Slow Motion’ will be on view inside and outside of the Domestic Arts Building through September 1, 2025. Take a look next time you visit and see what you can find! #groundsforsculpture #slowmotion #monumentlab #billydufala #rair @monument_lab @bdufala @rair_philly

Slow Motion featured artist Billy Dufala’s “Future Futures” visualizes the life cycles of aluminum. For @bdufala , the creative director of @rair_philly , this monument will continue to morph throughout the run of the exhibition and after the bales will be sold back to the commodities market. The funds from the sale will form a micro-endowment that will earn interest on its holdings, supporting future creative projects. Such an approach to sculpture illuminates the social, political, and ecological implications of improvised systems, while prioritizing access and resource redistribution to collaborators and partners. Billy Dufala’s “Future Futures” is on view at @groundsforsculpture , through September 2025. 🎥 Video by: @cholapaola

Artist Billy Dufala’s (@bdufala ) “Future Futures” is both a sculpture and a material commodity. The forty bales are made of aluminum scraps that were diverted from landfills by human hands for future use. Aluminum tells multiple stories of circularity: although it is consistently discarded, it is able to maintain value through the process of its separation from a waste stream into a supply chain, its reuse, and its reconstitution into art.  By visualizing the life cycles of aluminum, Dufala’s monument speaks to the environmental and social implications of raw materials before and after their use. Future Futures Is featured in our Slow Motion exhibition—on view through September 2025 at @groundsforsculpture . Learn more about the exhibition at the link in bio. I am very excited about this!! #Repost @monument_lab … Coming this Spring: We are excited to announce Slow Motion, an indoor and outdoor exhibition curated by Patricia Eunji Kim (@triciaeunjikim ) for Monumbet Lab at @groundsforsculpture , reimagines the material possibilities of public memory. The exhibition will feature artists: Billy Dufala (@bdufala ), @anateresafernandez , @colette_fu , Omar Tate (@coltrane215 ), and Sandy Williams IV (@the_sandy_can ) who make their mark through unconventional materials and processes for sculpture. By experimenting with the life cycles of collective memory, the exhibition invites artists as well as visitors to play with the central question, “how can we remake our relationship with monuments?”
