ARMANDO ROSALES is here!!!
@armandorosalesrivero is the 2nd artist in this years cohort. He is a sculptor and experimental percussionist whose work explores the intersections of the intimate, institutional and political. Through sculpture and installation , he examines materiality, sound, and questions how forces shaping behavior connect to the body as a site of learning and transformation.
While at RAIR, he has been developing a series of kinetic and static sculptures that double as musical instruments and muted objects. Through material investigation, contact microphones, and friction, he has created a range of soundscapes built around slow, rhythmic cycles.
Mark your calendars for Saturday May 23rd at 530pm. Armando will be presenting the percussive sculptures made from materials found on site and will be joined by local percussionists to activate and improvise through an installation of his work in the mechanics Barn at RAIR.
More details on the performance coming soon.
A couple weekends ago we hosted our first ever RAIR Flea Market!! 100% of the material that we had for sale was sourced directly from the waste stream by RAIR staff. Although it was a rainy and cold day we had a huge turnout of folks who were able to buy some cool stuff, take a tour of the recycling facility, and enjoy popcorn and hotdogs. All these goodies were on their last stop before heading to landfill so THANK YOU for saving them and giving them a new life 💚 dm us pictures of the things you got in their new space or show us what kind of art your creating from them, we want to see!
In love and trash ❤️🔥🗑️❤️🔥
RAIR
During their time at RAIR, @m.slater_ continued their research practice by experimenting with a moldable material that they made from drywall waste that comes through the recycling facility everyday. Using this material, M created DWB (Drywall Waste Bricks) as an extension of their past works in similar shapes made from paper pulp. After a lot of research and development using the materials and molds they made at RAIR, M will return for a long weekend to create a number of sculptures based on ad-hoc lumber structures that they've photographed around the city.
During their time in residence, RAIR staff arranged a field trip to USA Gypsum in Denver, PA to see how one of the largest drywall recyclers in the US processes drywall. M was able to learn more about the applications this ubiquitous material has in the world.
We can't wait to have M back later this year!
