Full circle moment! đŤ It was a joy to see our 2025 Student Design Competition winners present to the City of Coquitlam Council today. Team StormWise Innovations, comprised of UBC students JadenâŻGauw, Jaden Mah, Kajal Mishra, Cindy Chow and Megan Slot, shared insights on their innovative stormwater management solution for Coquitlamâs Nelson Creek Watershed and reflected on their journey to earning first place at both the regional BCWWA and international WEFTEC competitions.
A big thank you to the City of Coquitlam council and staff for taking the time to hear from these talented students and for recognizing the value of student design competitions in shaping future water professionals.
We also extend our gratitude to city staff Cassidy Stadel and Trevor Cheung for their guidance as city liaisons throughout the process, and to Dr. Zeina Baalbaki, UBC faculty advisor, for her mentorship and support.

This week, 2026 BCWWA Student Design Competition participants had the opportunity to check out the Fishtrap Creek watershed in Abbottsford, BC . While the air was brisk, students brought the energy asking vibrant questions and a fresh perspective engaging with representatives from the City of Abbottsford and our SDC committee.

2025 Leadership Council has officially wrapped! Yesterday, the BCWWA Board of Directors and 20+ co-leads from BCWWAâs committees, communities of practice and groups met for a day of engagement, learning and cross-collaboration across all leadership and program areas of the BCWWA.
We look forward to this annual event as a valuable opportunity to hear from our volunteer leaders, gather feedback, and strengthen our understanding of how best to serve and advocate for our members.

A huge highlight of our inaugural MLA day in Victoria was hearing the Honourable Randene Neill, Minister of Water, Land & Resource Stewardship, recognize our 2025 BCWWA Student Design Competition winners!
As mentioned, the winning team, Team StormWise Innovations, also won the international competition at WEFTEC in Chicago. We appreciate the Ministerâs acknowledgement of this competition, which supports growing talent in the water sector.

In #Victoria this week, the BCWWA had the opportunity to return to the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) for a follow-up meeting. #BCWWA Board Members, Brianne Tenk, Deirdre Moran and Ted Molyneux along with CEO Lee Coonfer and #EOCP CEO Katja Roberts met with WLRS Ministerial Assistant Marshall Scott-Bigsby to discuss small water systems, water sector workforce resilience and building engagement between government and the sector.

Victoria has long been a favourite conference destination for BCWWA and is home to BCâs Legislature, making it the perfect setting for national water conversations.
The event kicked off with opening remarks from @cityofvictoria Mayor Marianne Alto, followed by a meaningful land acknowledgement delivered by Florence Dick of the Songhees Nation.
And of course, we couldnât miss the chance to give a warm BCWWA welcome to CWWA Executive Director Robert Haller - complete with our signature BCWWA water drop hat and an âI â¤ď¸ BC Waterâ water bottle!
