Happy Paramedic Services Week! From May 17-23, we’ll be celebrating paramedics and emergency medical responders who provide care and support for patients throughout the province.
Every day, they respond to 9-1-1 medical emergencies and look after patients during transfers between hospitals and health-care facilities, providing care when it matters the most.
Learn more about paramedics and emergency medical responders and the vital role they play in BC’s healthcare system. If you see a paramedic this week, say thank you!

Today we honour the memories of #paramedics Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier. The pair were attending a call inside a water-testing shed at the decommissioned Sullivan Mine on this day 20 years ago, when they, along with two mine employees, died from a lack of oxygen. #LODD #InMemoriam @APBC873

Three simple actions can help prevent window and balcony falls this summer: 🌞
1. Move furniture, plants, and boxes away from open windows - children can often climb before they can walk! 🎍 🛋
2. Install locks so windows cannot open more than 10cm wide. Screens keep bugs out, not children in. 🔒
3. Supervise young children near windows, decks, and balconies. Don’t underestimate a child’s mobility. 👶🏽

"This is just a little note to express how deeply grateful and blessed I feel to be one of Sabrina's clients on Quadra Island. I cannot stress enough how much her visits have enriched my quality of life. She is a very special person as I'm sure all her clients must feel. A very kind, thoughtful, caring young woman and a stellar tribute to your profession as a community paramedic. God bless." - Tori

In 2025, there was a 35 per cent increase in the number of patients treated @bcchildrens for injuries related to falls from windows and balconies compared to the previous year.
Every spring and summer in BC, children die and suffer devastating injuries as the result of falls from windows and balconies.
If you have children in your home, there are simple steps you can take to prevent these terrible accidents:
- Talk to children about the dangers of playing near open windows and on balconies
- Move furniture and planters away from windows and balconies; keep in mind children can often climb before they can walk
- Install locks on windows that prevent them from opening more than 10 centimetres
- Remember that screens keep bugs out, not kids in. Screens can easily be pushed out and are not enough to prevent a child from falling out a window.
Today we honour the memory of Michael (Mike) Scott Gray. The 39-year-old #paramedic and 11-year veteran of BCEHS died suddenly from a medical condition on April 8, 2008, just after transporting a #patient to VGH. #LODD #InMemoriam
"In the early morning hours of December 18, 2025, I called 911 for chest pain. I Initially declined transfer to hospital as my vitals were not too bad, but one paramedic suggested that I go as the hospital could see things they can't. As it turns out I was having a massive heart attack! That paramedic saved my life! I wish I knew your name, you are an angel! I am eternally grateful!" - Carmen

Earlier today, the Ambulance Paramedics of BC @apbc.873 Ceremonial Unit and the BCEHS Honour Guard took part in a solemn ceremony to mark the day of annual remembrance for paramedics and honour the ten BC paramedics who gave their lives in the line of duty. BCEHS leaders and Minister of Health Josie Osborne also attended to pay their respects.
On this day, and every day, we remember the paramedics in BC and elsewhere who have died in the line of duty and honour the sacrifice they made in the service of others.
On this official day of annual remembrance for #paramedics, we remember and honour our colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Since 1988, 10 paramedics in British Columbia have given their lives in the line of duty. #LODD #InMemoriam @apbc.873
Today we honour the memory of Theresa Bond. The 42-year-old #paramedic chief and 10-year veteran of BCEHS died in a plane crash en route to a Unit Chief's meeting in Smithers on May 4, 1990. #LODD #InMemoriam @APBC873
"I just wanted to take the time to thank the paramedics who had come to my work in Kamloops. Not only were they patient with the client that I had called for but they were kind and compassionate. I don't know the names of the paramedics who came but there were 2 paramedics and a paramedic student. Thank you again for providing the best patient centered care I've seen." - Sadie
