A room of one’s own in Sydney with @bbqriblet
Rachel is an artist, model, musician, and mother. In this journal, she shares her journey from model to textile artist, and how her practice has evolved alongside her life - from discovering knitting as a form of grounding after moving to Australia, to developing a deeply considered weaving practice rooted in handwork and time.
We step inside her new surry hills studio to talk about her working process, her upcoming first solo exhibition, and her favourite places in Sydney.

My weekend summed up! Finished this giant ambitious piece and feeling stoked.
Woven silk base on acrylic with my favourite difficult stainless steel and silk creating this electric space between the fibres. I love experimenting in this three-dimensional place.
My talented and gorgeous friend @tuna__rice came and helped document the set up of my show earlier this year. In particular, the largest and most time consuming work, titled Duality (Mirror). It was the first piece I completed towards the show, and totalled nearly 10 meters of weaving. As you can see it was at least a two man job to set up! Weaving a piece like this, which you can only view incrementally until it’s taken off the loom, is an exercise in patience and trust in the process of preparation. It took me 2 months to complete and was totally worth it!

For several pieces in my show I used a special stainless steel filament, hair fine, blended into the silk. It offered a unique textural element that redefined the shine of the silk and the way colours protracted on the surface.

I love weaving and I love these photos by my friend @arvinpremkumar in my recently former studio, sun drenched.
When I was 23 I signed up to a mailing list for expressions of interest in the Hand Weavers and Spinner Guild of NSW course in shaft-weaving. At the time I was obsessed with knitting and saw weaving vaguely as an extension of that. I didn’t know much. 6 months later, after I had long forgotten signing up , I received an email indicating availability in an 8-week starter course at the Guild, then based in Burwood. What began as a 2 month toe-dip turned into a 2 year deep dive escapade of learning the wonders of shaft weaving, under the expert tutelage of one Liz Calnan, contemporary of the legendary Vale @lizwilliamsonweaver I realise now how lucky I have been to have studied under this wonderful women, when windows into this world, especially in Australia are fast dwindling.
Forever grateful for the way life shapes us in its own unique way, and the gifts we don’t always understand right away.
Can’t wait to share pics of the new space. A very special thank you to @ninatreffkorn and @edwardwoodley for facilitating such wonderful spaces for me to work in ✨
A week of firsts! So excited to share that my work 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨) has been selected as a finalist for #fishersghostartaward @campbelltownartscentre
This work explores identity as ephemeral, transitional and reactive to environment. It’s an ode to experiences of diaspora and finding solace in our ability to renew and adapt.
