Living in the unfamiliar for even a few days can set the axis of life slightly off. We are distracted and we forget. These rooms often hold our possessions after we check out and return home. The things we have left behind. This time at The Windsor hold on to the things you have fallen in love with, you don’t want to live without, you want to see everyday. SULLIVAN+STRUMPF - Syd/Gadigal, Melb/Naarm & Singapore For their inaugural presentation at Spring1883 in Victorian Suite 106, @sullivanstrumpf premiered a series of works by UK-based Jess Cochrane, alongside new works from Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran and Michael Lindeman. The curated selection also included works from Polly Borland, Barayuwa Munungurr, Daniel Crooks, Gemma Smith, Glenn Barkley, Yvette Coppersmith, Sam Cranstoun and Tim Silver. THANG DO - Lady Hoping for Liberty🗽was presented by Thang Do & Victoria Mangano as part of Spring1883’s VIP Preview Day, on Wed 13 August. @thangdo_thangdo ’s mesmerising and moving durational performance — a celebration of and homage to immigrant workers — was accompanied by a soundtrack composed by @victoriamangano.wav , featuring a 10-minute spoken word narrative about the immigrant experience. Thang’s journey through @hotel_windsor ’s historic corridors and descending the grand staircase, was beautifully captured by @carmenzammit photography. JEN VALENDER x ALPHA60 [PROJECT ROOM] - 422 We’d like to thank our dear friends @alpha60thelabel - for their generous support of the fair, and the wonderful merch (totes & t’s) they produce for us. Their dramatic and immersive @jenvalender installation, was presented in the Project Room on Level 4 @hotelwindsor for Spring1883. Sculptural forms encounter, endure and imagine bodies of water—from shower stalls and hotel loos to storm-washed shores—tracing the uncanny journeys between place, material and memory. The installation featured filmic works, sculptural elements and photographs. Alongside the work was the @alpha60thelabel Stormborne Artist Series: a weatherproof raincoat and sculptural bags inspired by coastal storms and Valender's signature tassel forms. Valender’s ‘Stormborne’ immerses audiences in the rising drama of Australia’s changing coastal climate. Made during a winter residency, Valender’s film captures the season’s rising turbulence and the elemental theatre of a changing climate. It is a portrait of exposure. Like infectious disease, environmental collapse offers no exemption—status, wealth, and borders fall away. We are equally porous to air, to atmosphere, to what comes next. Presented in the bathroom, ‘Shower Opera, Prince Cover’, 2025, was filmed in situ in the shower of Room 422 at the Windsor Hotel. This single-channel, three-minute film captures a performance of Purple Rain by the Artist formerly known as Prince. The work merges shower singing with operatic delivery, staged through a refurbished 1970s Japanese audio-visual unit enhanced with contemporary digital technology.
