I've always thought I end up in the randomest places. This falls into that category. I'm featured and interviewed as a talent agent in a fashion magazine published in Germany and circulated in Europe. In #TrendPrive’s Spring issue I talk about how I became an agent, tips on how to last in this industry, etc. and it has some of my photos with Jimmy Fallon, Bruno Mars, Brandy, Elisabeth Moss and others. Guest speaker at my alma mater’s 125th anniversary. 🥳 Northern Illinois University, Feb. 18, 2020. What an honor to be a part of NIU’s 125th celebration! Speaking in front of students, faculty & the university president got me emotional as I shared my story; the eldest son of immigrant parents, first one to go to college, who at one point was a bit shy (believe it or not) cause of his thick accent & didn’t think was good enough to attend a university (obviously my own insecurity). I talked about finding a sense of belonging within the Asian student groups, joining the fight to have an Asian Center (alongside student leaders who came before me), becoming the President of Asian American Assoc., & being the first student to be hired by the school’s Presidential Task Force on Asian Americans. I got to walk around campus & visit old spots. Said hi to my favorite prof., Dr. Crail & her Tagalog class, then stopped by Ohana, a gathering at the Asian American Resource Center (AARC). What a trip down memory lane walkin in the bitter cold (18° F but felt like 9° because DeKalb 😂)! Thank you to the Dir. of the AARC, Michelle Bringas & the 125th anniversary committee for flying me in. 😁
I came to NIU in ‘99 & I struggled at first but thank God I found my Asian American family. Because of them my time in DeKalb is something I’ve always cherished. Who would’ve thought that this shy kid with a thick accent who first stepped on campus 21 years ago would be coming back to speak (for the 5th time) to a new generation of students, encouraging them to get involved, by sharing his experience...on the same stage where he received the school’s Senior Leadership Award 18 years prior? Another reason why I end all my speeches with my life verse, Jeremiah 29:11.🙏🏼
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month & I share this with a grateful heart to my Asian American community. Thank you for making my story as colorful as it is. Being both Asian & an NIU Huskie play major parts in who I am today. I pray for our community to stay strong & vigilant in these times. Last Saturday, I turned another year older and I couldn’t be happier with how gorgeous the day turned out to be. ☀️ So grateful to continue my yearly tradition of spending 4/11 by (or on) the water. It was a perfect sunset sail, more than I hoped for, spent with amazing company. 💯 THANK YOU for all the birthday love that came pouring in all weekend! I appreciate you all! And once again I’m reminded of this quote, “Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.” 🙏🏼 Here’s to another year, with much love and gratitude. ❤️❤️❤️
