Chuffed to see The Bartender’s Pantry on the shortlist for the 2025 James Beard Foundation media awards. I know Jim, Bart, and I left everything on the table in the process of making this the best work it could be, so it’s a real honor to be recognized. And it’s especially wonderful to see our humble handbook listed alongside such amazing company: Congrats also to
@nicola.nice ,
@drinksat6 ,
@ivymix and
@mdkrigbaum on making the final cut!
This nomination means a lot, in part because our goal was to break the typical cocktail recipe book model. It’s not just a book of delicious drinks, but rather an invitation to look at commonly used cocktail ingredients through a lens typically only applied to foodways scholarship. Our hope is that by educating readers about the social, political, agricultural, and cultural origins of the ingredients used to make drinks, and the systems that conspire to bring them to the glass, readers will walk away with a newfound respect and appreciation for the land and people who grow, harvest, process, and prepare beverages of all kinds.
Our goal was to include as many voices and perspectives as possible; we interviewed a broad collection of experts and referenced more than one hundred books and articles to give readers a comprehensive contemporary overview of each ingredient. We also encourage readers to be respectful of the origins of each recipe and lean into building relationships with experts, producers, purveyors, guests, and other readers to ultimately cultivate communities that stretch beyond the insulated cocktail scene.
We believe that by taking a Slow Food approach to cocktails—eschewing the idea that they should be cheap, fast, and easy to make—the drinks world might become a more inclusive, community-centric place. The book’s subtitle, “A Beverage Handbook for the Universal Bar,” gestures towards this vision.
Anyway, I’ll leave it brief for now and say that we’re just absolutely thrilled for this recognition. Thanks so much to the Ten Speed Press team (
@mollyabirnbaum you’re the best!!) for making this book a reality, and to all of the Beard Foundation voters!! We’ll see y’all in Chicago!
