Glasgow School of Art, looking great on a crisp autumnal morning , beautifully rendered by @_grbs_ . Swipe to see the current picture of the site , allegedly they are entirely rebuilding the school but I still think they could use something more inspiring at the bottom of the hill than what’s on the table. . #barrywark #ecologicaldesign #glasgow #glasgowschoolofart #glasgowarchitecture #mackintosh #megalithic #stonearchitecture

Happy to share that I’m on the front cover of @framemagazine ‘s summer ‘24 issue. . The magazine also includes an interview as part of their ‘ Ones to Watch’ series where I discuss generative & AI integrated design methods and how I am leveraging these tools in my work on Architecture and Ecology. . If you get a copy, let me know your thoughts . #barrywark #ecologicaldesign #aidesign #aiarchitecture #computationaldesign #naturearchitecture #environmentdesign

Tùr House. . Rather than treating buildings as fixed and disposable objects, the project asks how architecture might be designed to evolve over time—able to be taken apart, repaired, and reconfigured as needs change. At the center of the proposal is a single-material building envelope made from large-scale 3D-printed blocks. The façade is conceived as an independent outer layer, separate from the structure and interior spaces inside. By avoiding complex, multi-layered façade systems, the project imagines a more circular approach to construction, where materials can be reused or recycled. . The building does not resist weathering and environment but absorbs it. In contrast to the familiar image of the transparent glass house in nature, this project proposes a quieter, more introspective domestic environment. . Tholos House . A full refurbishment of an existing house in Cambridge, England — named after its extension. Four load-bearing stone columns define the new volume, two of which are inhabitable, drawing on the ancient tradition of circular gathering spaces in Greek antiquity. . The clients had the confidence to push this idea, and the project is better for it. Detailed design is well underway with a great team — looking forward to getting it on site. . Some exploratory images of a façade that combines expressive, permanent structural elements with more standardized infill components designed for replacement. . #barrywark #ecologicalarchitecture #ecodesign #environmentalart #weathering

Digital Rocks III . A limit run of objects I designed for @concr3de to help them raise money for a good cause. . What is a ‘digital rock’? Or in what way might this phrase, often used as a dismissive critique of emerging movements in art and architecture, be subverted to become a productive way to consider ecology today? A rock is a naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of one or more minerals or organic matter. ‘digital rocks’ explore a computational design process that aggregates seemingly disparate qualities into a coherent, solid object. In these ‘rocks’, the goal is not to reproduce geology as form, but to explore the ambiguity of our contemporary, ecological ground, between what is natural and what is artifactual, and to provoke questions surrounding the relationship between the digital and physical worlds. . #barrywark #stonesculpture #3dprints #3dprinting #stonedesign

Corbel house 2025 . This house is an adaptive reuse project where we turned an existing mid-20th century home into a passivhaus. The exterior is redesigned with a thickened brick envelope to passively shade the interior during the summer months. This mass is carved by solar analysis, giving the house its characterful brick corbels. The project leaves many of the original materials exposed internally and embellishes it with custom built joinery and our own furniture. . Tùr House , newly constructed. . In order to render the temporal aspect of the project, I worked with @analog1.eu to show the building not only as a glistening new build, but also to imagine the building many, many years in the future as the forest had grown around it and the weathering had taken hold. . #barrywark #ecodesign #nycarchitect #circulardesign #megalithic

In contrast to the familiar image of the transparent glass house in nature, Tùr House proposes a quieter, more introspective domestic environment. In this endeavour, it avoids returning to minimalism, instead valuing qualities of solidity, material expression, and articulation. . WEATHERING . The façade of Tùr House is conceived as a register of its biome. Ledges collect leaves and seeds, textured surfaces retain water, and material finishes accommodate staining, biological growth, and erosion. . It attempts to reframe weathering not as material degradation, but as an inevitable condition and a central subject of inquiry within contemporary environmental architecture. By designing with these processes in mind, architecture can produce alternative aesthetics that more adequately reflect our understanding of ecology today by foregrounding buildings connection with environment. .
