BAM is thrilled to announce our current Artist in Residence Aldeneil Española!
Aldeneil Española Jr. is a queer, Canadian-Filipinx artist living and working on Treaty 6 Territory in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts – Studio Arts (Honours) program at the University of Saskatchewan, Aldeneil’s practice examines identity as a living, accumulative process that is shaped by the ongoing negotiations of place, gender, and time.
During the next 3 months Aldaneil will be working on their project PARALUMAN:
In identity, in memory, in the life of an object.
I am fiercely romanced by the notion that I am an accumulation of experiences, objects, and obsessions. For the coming months, I will sit with objects: used things, outdated things, memories of the Philippines, and examine how my life has been shaped by what I have handled and what has handled me. To find the living edge of something the world has already walked past.
I start this journey with my used makeup wipes. Pigment and residue. Evidence of a dream that was painted and then melted off. I used to call it waste, something to be thrown away after use. But now, I find it worth holding, worth studying the marks, the gestures, and the story. There is something in the discarded that demands my attention. I am drawn to that refusal. I recognize it.
I am not becoming anything. I am just continuing.

Join me for a video walk through of some of the works in the exhibition Doug Taylor: a Creative Force. This is a show spanning decades of Doug’s art making and covers a variety of his styles and explorations. This is a posthumous exhibit celebrating the art and spirit of the wonderful Douglas Taylor.
Please join us for the reception and sale this Saturday, March 21, 2-7pm.
Doug was a creative force. He wanted to create art in every possible way; sometimes this led to ephemeral and guerilla art antics. Here’s a few of Doug’s outdoor works over the years
“I knew Doug Taylor for over 25 years. He was my friend, my teacher, my canoe-mate, and my partner in many art happenings (some legit, some guerrilla). He wasn’t one to sit idle, he was driven to make art. To creatively make art not motivated by money or recognition.
Doug was brilliant, forever curious, funny and endlessly creative. This vibrant and varied show is a reminder of that”
-Arthur Perlett
BAM is excited to host Doug Taylor: a Creative Force. A posthumous exhibition celebrating the spirit and work of Doug Taylor.
Doug was a creative force. He was drawn to making art in any way and any form: seeing the world as potential canvas and materials. Doug was studied in art history, attended Emma Lake and worked in museums; he knew the tools but he didn’t follow any of the rules. Anything he could get his hands on would be used as colour, while he experimented and explored applications and form. Doug was also a bit of a rebel and made guerrilla public art in unexpected places: painting abandoned farm houses, bridge piers accessible by canoe, pieces strung up in trees, or outdoor ephemeral works. Doug Taylor passed away suddenly eight years ago. He left behind a wife, Maryanne; family; friends; and a lot of art on the farm.
I have long been an admirer of Doug’s work and wish I could have gotten to know him more. As an artist your spirit lives on in the art you leave behindon the walls of your collectors. This is a chance to celebrate and remember the creative force that was Doug Taylor. It’s an honour to put on this exhibition.
Thank you to Doug’s close friend, Arthur Perlett, for your help making this happen. I feel like I got know Doug better while spending time with his work and hearing your stories

This exhibition was a practice in vulnerability on many levels. Showing my personal data in the open was a message on how fragile data is in general. It’s here on earth, in nature and bound to erode with time.
Who benefits from our vulnerability? Who benefits from our grief?
I’m so glad I got to spend time doing extensive research through BAM on this topic of deathbots, consent and data. In a way it helped me zoom out because I saw a lot of parallels between deathbots, ouija boards and necromancy.
Also in theory I wanted to make people uneasy and uncomfortable and sit with these ideas, but in practice when I observed them taking deep breaths or feel uncomfortable, it made me feel kind of bad too 🥲
I had quite a few conversations, thank you Dave and thank you to everyone who supported me w this ❤️
Introducing BAM’s January/February artist in residence Akshara Dash @depth.place ‼️
Akshara Dash is a critical and speculative designer whose work examines the relationship between death and technology. She explores questions like what it means for software to die and how deathbots, AI tools that simulate deceased people, are shaping experiences of grief and loss.
As a multidisciplinary creative, she works across mediums including digital interfaces, fragrance, and zines.
Stay tuned to follow Akshara’s work!
