William P.K. Carter’s Beautiful Without Consequence is a fantastical puppet performance about removing the prey mentality from the Queer Black identity and founding community in its absence. Mimicking the life cycle of a butterfly, this show follows the main character as they change through many physical forms in search of an existence outside of the grasp of their oppressors—liberating their body and mind alike.
Exploring themes of yearning, belonging, internalized homophobia/racism, and self-image, “Beautiful Without Consequence” forges an intimate connection between the viewer and the material and invites all to release the harmful expectations that they uphold within themselves and become more engaged within their own communities.
A work-in-progress showing of a piece in development with the support of a Workshop Grant from The Jim Henson Foundation.

William PK Carter’s puppets and concept art on view @conveyeror until April 28. This fantastically exhibition is just a fractions of Carter’s immersive multidisciplinary practice of drawing, quilting, soft sculpture, puppets art and performance. Each piece is a combination of all these mediums, expertly performed by the artist and his assistants.
One of the best aspects of Convey/er/or Gallery is that it is a public art space - all exhibitions are visible 24/7 through the gallery windows and often look even better when illuminated at night. Stop by whenever you’re on Main Street or schedule a tour with the gallery Director, Suprina Troche, by DMing @conveyeror gallery.
