Badger Trust welcomes a new government in Wales as a chance to make nature and the environment the priorities they urgently need to be. We welcome an opportunity to continue conversations about building on the work Wales has already done, using science-led data to reduce BovineTB, and keep moving in the right direction and to accelerate progress for this protected species. We're looking forward to working with Plaid on the benefits of a science-led BovineTB policy for cattle and wildlife, without returning to the distraction of badger culls, which won't stop BovineTB. There is no time to waste. We will seek urgent clarification of Plaid Cymru’s plans for nature in Wales.

Badger Trust is cautiously optimistic that the badger cull has ended. Unfortunately we are not receiving any response from APHA however with no new licenses being approved in Cumbria and a move to a vaccination program, it's looking like the cull has ended! Over 247,000 badgers have been killed during the English badger cull, and it's important to state that just because there is an end now, that does not mean that badger culling won't come back in the future. Badger Trust will continue to campaign for a permanent end to the cull in England and campaign against the start of a cull in Wales. Thank you to every supporter, individual, organisation and charity that has fought for the end of the badger cull. To those who started this battle with us but whom we have lost along the way. This result is not due to one organisation, but to the huge amount of people that have come together to speak up for our native badgers and their protection. We hope this is the end of the badger cull in England, but we're not done yet!

A poll by RSPCA Cymru, conducted earlier this week, has found that 63% of people in Wales are either ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ uncomfortable with badger culling being conducted in Wales, using lethal methods approved by government authorities. Meanwhile, more than two thirds (68%) are either ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ uncomfortable with the concept of public funds being used for the culling of badgers. In fact, badger culling directly impacts the political support of almost 60% of the Welsh public, with 52% less likely to support a political party that endorses badger culling. RSPCA Cymru say the new Welsh Government must “listen to people’s love of wildlife” as the poll shows that badgers are among the nation’s favourite animals, with a majority opposed to culling them to deal with Bovine TB. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and we wanted to remind the entire badger clan that it’s okay to feel angry, frustrated, upset, and tired about the challenges our badger friends, and all wildlife, are currently facing. We understand that the fight to protect wildlife can sometimes feel monumental and that you may be experiencing eco-anxiety and compassion fatigue. We want to remind you that it's okay to feel this way, and it's important you recognise when you’re experiencing these feelings and how you can care for yourself during this time. This week is a good time to reflect, celebrate the wins and support your mental health. Remember: 🦡 It’s okay not to feel okay 🦡 You are not alone 🦡 Talk to someone if you feel you’re struggling 🦡 @Badgertrust will always be working to protect badgers, their setts and habitats. It’s okay for you to take a break and take action when you feel ready. @mindcharity has a lot of resources to help support your mental health and a dedicated advice line for when you're struggling. 📷@steve34owen

Join us in Westminster on 9 May for a peaceful rally calling on the government to end hunting for good. The government’s public consultation on strengthening hunting laws is open until 18 June. This is a pivotal moment for wildlife, and public concern about the persecution of animals is growing. Nigel, Chief Executive of @badgertrust , explains what he will be speaking about at the rally, focusing on why badgers are often the forgotten victims of hunting. Hear also from Chris Packham, Megan McCubbin and others as we come together to demand stronger protections. Join us and show the strength of public support for ending this cruelty for good.
