Good Girl’s Guide to Murder - Season 2 Been waiting to announce this! My first time working for Netflix and BBC! What a party. Proud to have gotten the opportunity to shoot the first and final episodes of the new season. @a_abbasi thank you for bringing me on board. ’Tis been a truly wild decade. Nice to finally put something out with you that won’t get banned in our home country :D Got the chance to work with so many legends. The fearless trailblazer and my soul sister @sophyashi The master of making incredibly hard work look effortless @fyffemacclancy My fav hooligan of them all @hojay92 The charming and mysterious trio that runs moonagepictures Everyone in the lovely AD and production team, Barry, Helen, Maggie, Jamie and the whole gang. My phenomenal cam op and all-round nice guy @yannickhausler , our efficient and badass camera team @fazrazam , Romy, Marc, @jake.s.w - led by the lovely @samantha_camera My brother in arms and gaffer Joe Hewitt and his fantastic light team Also @ememyers you were cool too :p But f’reals, truly a privilege to witness you and the entire cast run with these roles and bring them to life @ashaabanks @zain.iqbl @yalimarg @senseijude @jessicawebber3 @ohhenryashton @carlawoodcock @edenhdavies @misiabutler All so professional, down to earth and so dang good at their jobs. It’s been five years since we gave birth to this (Rosemary’s) baby. - “Every structure of authority, hierarchy or domination has the burden of proof; it has to demonstrate that it’s legitimate. Maybe it can. If it can’t, it should be dismantled. This just seems intuitively obvious” Thanks, Noam Chomsky! It sure does. - Freedom of expression in any art-form is well worth fighting for. - @a_abbasi , you wrote a beast that I certainly could not tame, but it pissed off some people (and at least one government) and that really makes me laugh. - To @shailjask and team. You guys are love and power. Thank you for the mentorship, faith and guidance in navigating these murky waters. - To our beautiful cast and crew. I am still sorry you had to face the brunt of my poor management as a first-time producer. Forgive me and thank you for having the patience and mercy you did. I love you all. - To all those in the film industry (in Pak and abroad) who came through to help, we are in endless gratitude. The end credits list really does make the show go on. Grateful that you all answered our call. I think of this show as a lil’ ode to the women who raised me; my four elder sisters and my mama. My real life Churails.

Shoot. “Barzakh”. Episode 6 out of 6. Some (public) notes to self: - When I’m very old and telling my Tri-Robo grandkids about my early career, I’ll def recall how proud I was to have gotten to be a part of this lil’ show. - Researching for this gave me a deep sense of appreciation of landscape painters, having never really understood the appeal before. Transfixed now when I come across a JW Turner, Thomas Cole, CD Friedrich, Andrew Wyeth, etc in the wild. - In a world dealing with a global warming crisis and a genocide, I find myself naively surprised by how a human can simultaneously have the capacity to be upset at fictional characters getting it on. - Need to carry way more black cloth next time. 20x20’s didn’t do much in those scenes. Consider laying out flat on ground to block bounce if there’s too much wind to rig vertically. - Grateful for my tech team. Our second unit DP @shahzaib5570 (who captured that wicked frame 7 for me), my gaffer @nadeem.multani.1694 , my focus puller @rabbanikamran , Atif our swing, and the proficient grips from JJ Lights. Love and respect. On to the next one.

Shoot. “Barzakh” Episode 5. Woohoo, my favorite episode. Really felt our surroundings deeply when doing this one. Hunza, you absolute behemoth. Thank you for showing us the way. “The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature”, Joey Campbell laying down the f’ing biz right there. Shoot. “Barzakh” Episode 3. Stuff directly from my original notes of things that @a_abbasi (director) and I had chatted about before we shot: - What are the diff ways to express symbology? - How do we make inserts powerful? - How do we make daylight interesting? - How do we capture the sense of judgement visually? - Figure out the right shade of pink. And examine why that shade? - When are we the passive observer versus an active participant? - How can a standard shot evolve into the next thing we want to experience? - Symmetry is objective. - Non-symmetry has a perspective. - Always include an element of nature in every scene (animals, fire, water, leaves, etc). - Study ensembles in paintings. Why is everyone situated where they are. Always intentional. - Start with a composition that goes somewhere else, and comes back to original but now slightly different. Skewed circularity of life. - Study how the smallest bit of behaviour or blocking can illicit a deep emotional reaction. - How do we go from overtly expressive to deeply intimate? - Wide lenses because your choices are not just yours. Everything is connected to something else. Lots more indulgence where this came from, but these were fun. Or at least a filmmaker’s idea of fun. And triple thanks to @aarij_1 , @waqasalik , @zoobianwar , @officialyasserv , @shahzaib5570 , @nadeemalkarimi and others for helping me with my own understanding of these concepts over the course of the project. Out now on the Tube. “Today, we need to overcome the wider and deeper apartheid - based on the illusion of separateness of humans from nature in our minds and lives” - Vandana Shiva My partner in thyme @a_abbasi , not sure how you do it, but please never stop. I am always rooting for you. My boss lady @shailjask , can always count on you to create a home for our most urgent ideas. My equanimous @aarij_1 , the poetry of making the most subtle adjustment and have everything fall into place. My anchor @waqasalik , you came through. What a f*cking guy. My young mama @zoobianwar , I will never forgive you for forgetting my apartment no. But I love you regardless. Lots more love coming soon. Yes, I’m doing a post for every episode.

Shoot. Music Video for Coke Studio. “Jhol”, with @maanusmusic & @annuralkhalid Got ca-jholed into doing this by director @jamalrahman , whose idea was to do an adaptation of Othello in twenty shots (it obviously started off with more but reality has quirky parameters). For my techies; after a prolonged love affair with LED’s, I decided for a last minute tryst with mostly classical lights for this. Green gels on HMI’s, spinning-mirror “gags” for passing lights on the train, copious amounts of tungsten lights to get that extra warm/gold skin tone, and a “breathing” ambiance (practicals being dimmed up and down thru a DMX in the bg). The idea was to keep the lighting dynamic because we wanted the camera to be as static as possible to clearly cover all story beats. Thank you @hashimali90 for giving us strikingly broody sets to light. Could we have gone darker? The answer is always yes. @meheksaeed for the extraordinarily creative styling. @saimabargfrede for the impeccable hair/MU. And thank you to the dream cast. So patient, hilarious and generous. The kings of sus @maanusmusic @sik.ki , @anikazulfikar with her deadly looks and my boy @sarmedaftabjadraan , a gem of an actor. Big love to my unparalleled tech team @nadeem.multani.1694 @rabbanikamran @iam_islam_ud_din @muhammadatiff @hamzaonair @m_aleefaraz and Bobby’s magic on DMX. Their dedication and support is REAL. Big love to @thepostbrothers for getting the colors spot on and @danishhasanr for the subtle CG work, it’s an impossible task but they killed it. And finally, thank you @jamalrahman for your clear thinking, tasteful choices and commitment to this story. And the exceptional AD team @farihaafzalkhan and @farjadakhtar for always holding everyone together 💛

Shoot. TVC. Haval Hybrid. Had an adventure within the dramatic mountains of Hunza Valley (Northern Pakistan). Unforgettable memories, bonds and a killer f’ing meteor shower.
