Our good friend Dan came to visit the other week, he's off to the Albion Cup and wanted a little bit of a different session to hone his edge.
Dan is an awesome fighter and a generally lovely bloke, he pressed me quite hard but I got a few good shots off, including this nice sequence of strike and cover while backing off.
Sadly for me Dan gets wise to stuff very quickly and the next pass absolutely skewered me. But its my account so I'm not showing that. 😜

Fred was a bit knackered filming this but its some more thoughts on why we use the strapped sheilds as we do.
Strapped sheilds function very differently to centre grips and this is a little exploration into one of the differences.

Reason to fight!!
Where to start with this behemoth of an event.
For those not aware, over the weekend myself and others from @orderoftheblade and some other clubs from the UK took part in a 23 hour sparring event for charity, in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance. We kept a single fight pit going for the entire event, with people swapping in and out to keep it going.
This was an absolute slog and so physically and mentally draining. I have done one of these before with @smarthemaclubs and will almost definitely do one again. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend taking part.
I could not have completed this without the support of family members and the other fighters involved. In particular Rich, Matt and @erant_dimachaerus
We had a friendly competition of who would take part in the most fights, that started as friendly competition but evolved into us spurring each other on to keep up with each other and ended with us helping each other all end on the same number of 50 fights completed.
It was an absolute pleasure to fight with all those that attended. It was a great time with great people. I am still feeling the axes and pains 2 days later but it was well worth it.

Fred and I have been fighting side by side for years now with very little instruction or thought gone into our training. It has grown purely from sparring against one another and learning how the other fights and moves.
We believe that the fighters you sparr most and train with most will make your best partners when fighting as a pair. This is evident to anyone who has been on the receiving end of an onslaught from the brothers Grimm.
We tested this out with Kieran and Blaize as they started about the same time with @orderoftheblade and have been sparring each other regularly. They did indeed prove our theory, as they had never fought as a pair before and were the hardest challenge Fred and I have had to date.

Fred and I thoroughly enjoy a good multiple combatant fight be that 2v2 or 2v1 or even as we have in the past us 2v3 or 4.
Our good friend Ross is always up for testing his #montante skills. So we are always happy to oblige.
We are regularly told how intimidating we are to fight when we are together as our cohesion is unnerving, given that we don't communicate with each other about what we are going to do.
This goes all the way to us approaching in lock steps even though we are of different heights with different stride lengths. This is not something we have practised. This is natural just from familiarity with one another.
But even for me, watching us step back to our starting positions in unison was #eerie The first time I saw it while editing this, I thought I had rewound the footage. So the second pass in this is legitimately us backing off in step.

This was taken a couple of weeks ago now at Rich's final session at the #loughborough chapter before handing it over to myself (Rob) and Fred to instruct. This 2 v 1 and the #sharktank that we gave Rich were a fitting send-off.
Fred and I always have a great time when it comes to multiple combatant fights, whether that be 2 on 1 or 5 v 5 tournaments as we have done at the Midlands musters held by @orderoftheblade
Rich is a daunting opponent even when you have an ally, especially as he is 6'10 and built like a #astartes
Let alone when he is carrying a steel #greatsword
The first pass, as you can see, Rich very much gets the better of us and manages in 2 consecutive strikes to disarm both of us. That is as far as his luck goes.
After that, Fred and I pick him apart. As Fred mentions, we do not talk about tactics. Instead, we read each others movements and intent.
Generally, Fred will be the aggressor as that suits his style, while I wait to pick my shots while Rich is concentrating on Fred. A couple of times, Rich tries to disrupt this by aiming straight for me. I just block long enough for Fred to re-engage and return things to our normal play.
This works to the best effect when Rich deals with Fred but misjudged a swing at me, leaving the Blade sailing over my head because we have conditioned him to fight Fred's height. Me having my #heatershield and closing so close so quickly means his only real option is my head.

This week is #fightweek and what a week it's been so far.
Starting with #Derby With #Coventry to happen tonight it's been a storm of blades and skills with people showing their best and absoltuely hammering the chance to dance!
It's also a bit of a biggie as Rich has handed over both #leicester and #loughborough to Rob and Fred as he goes on to raise the banner in Nottingham and Brimingham.
As part of the handover, but mostly because it's a blast, Rich picked up his steel Montante and faced the #Brothersgrin in a 2v1. Something weve not done for a while.
The opening pass saw rich disarm first Fred then Rob in short order. A stellar achievement and fantastic display of skill.
Not to be outdone Fred and Rob then escalated things with a cracking display of unified attacking that showed that yes wolves can bring down a bear, attacking in synchronised lockstep and scoring beautiful hits. They claim its entirely unspoken and just instinct at this point.
There was some singing as well, but we'll let Fred polute your feed with that.
Order of the Blade is growing and helping people across the midlands find and embrace their martial passion, and while it's a slightly sad occasion as Rich now wont be seen regulalrly at LB or Lei for a while, it's also a joyous one as now we'll have new fighters coming in and new bouts to share with you all.
Keep your eyes peeled for the March #midlandsmuster dates. It's a fantastic chance to see us, meet us and then have a dance

Thought I'd start this year off by finishing my shield I started painting last year.
I don't spar with this shield anymore as it got too dry and the rim is damaged and turns to confetti with any impact. This is my original shield ans nowhere near as sturdy as my current #roundshield made by the Order's very own @andy.parish.14
But I want to get this paint job finished as this will be going on my wall along with my first #heatershield which is also now dead.
I'm still not 100% sure where I'm going with this paint scheme. Either I'll do the other sections white or I'll also be doing them red. What do you peeps think?

My #heatershield is finally being laid to rest, well after being stripped for parts. Only the straps and arm padding is being salvaged so the actual board can be hung on the wall with my dead #roundshield
This shield made by @andy.parish.14 has more than served its time. I think I've had it for around a year, which may not seem like a long time. But that is a year of sparring twice a week and around 6 5 hour Midlands musters, a 24 hour sparring event with @smarthemaclubs , a 3 day sparring event called fight camp and possibly more. This also includes countless masters bouts against the freight train that is my #swordbrother @fredfights
The only reason I'm stopping using it now is that top edge above my hand. Where clearly I like to punch incoming blades. Wednesday this week I fought Ryan from @orderoftheblade and I just about felt a shot to that edge that made contact with my hand. That and at one point he got the tip of his #longsword through the gap that has formed. Other than that the board is predominantly still in perfect working order.
The shields made by Parish are things of beauty and so well constructed to handle the level of violence that we put them through. If your wanting a shield get in touch with him.
