Presenting ‘Richard Avedon Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951-2004’.
Throughout his career, Avedon audaciously broke the common rule that portrait photographers should flatter public personalities. Instead, he chose to highlight what he called the ‘avalanche of age,’ dramatizing the universal experience of getting older.
Spanning 90 portraits made across half a century, ‘Immortal’ is an ambitious meditation on aging through the lens of this legendary photographer.
Featuring texts by Adam Gopnik, Vince Aletti (
@vincealetti ), and Gaëlle Morel (
@gaelleleilamorel ), with an essay and edited by Paul Roth (
@paulrothimc ).
This publication anticipates a major exhibition of the same name curated by Paul Roth, opening in February 2026 at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (
@mbamtl ) and September 2026 at The Image Centre in Toronto (
@imagecentreto ).
