A whirlwind three days at the Musée de beaux-arts de Montréal @mbamtl — final install touches, press preview, vernissage, and an onstage conversation with Mary-Dailey Desmarais @md_desmarais , Zhao Ionesco Chief Curator at the MMFA. It was exciting to see the exhibition come together and to experience its launch. RICHARD AVEDON: IMMORTAL features nearly 90 portraits of public figures and everyday citizens from across Avedon’s prolific career and is on view in Montreal through August 9. The exhibition then travels to The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University, where it will be on view from September 9 through December 5, 2026. Be sure to stop by the MMFA shop for the catalog. It includes writing by Adam Gopnik, Vince Aletti, Gaëlle Morel @gaelleleilamorel , and yours truly, alongside Avedon’s extraordinary photographs. Join us from 6 to 8pm tomorrow, January 15, for the opening of “Facing West,” an exhibition of rare prints from Richard Avedon’s photographic series “In the American West” (1979–84) at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London. Avedon is pictured here in 1983 with Richard Wheatcroft, a rancher from Jordan, Montana, whom he photographed twice (in both 1981 and 1983), and with whom he developed a friendship. Using an 8 x 10 Deardorff camera, natural light, and scant props, Avedon photographed his sitters against a white backdrop, retaining the black border from the film negative edge to emphasize the images’ absence of compositional manipulation. “Richard Avedon: Facing West,” an exhibition of rare prints from the photographic series “In the American West” (1979–84), including works that have not been shown since their debut in 1985, opens at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London, on January 15. The show is curated by the photographer’s granddaughter, Caroline Avedon (@carolineavedon ). “In the American West,” an extended series commissioned by and first exhibited at the Amon Carter Museum (@theamoncarter ) in Fort Worth, Texas, celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2025. Returning to the series four decades after its initial unveiling, “Facing West” prompts reflection on the evolving interpretation of the photographs’ imagery, and on the series’ status as its maker’s magnum opus. It has been 40 years since Avedon’s In the American West debuted at the Amon Carter Museum in Forth Worth, Texas. Presenting ‘Richard Avedon Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951-2004’. Throughout his career, Avedon audaciously broke the common rule that portrait photographers should flatter public personalities. Instead, he chose to highlight what he called the ‘avalanche of age,’ dramatizing the universal experience of getting older. Spanning 90 portraits made across half a century, ‘Immortal’ is an ambitious meditation on aging through the lens of this legendary photographer. Featuring texts by Adam Gopnik, Vince Aletti (@vincealetti ), and Gaëlle Morel (@gaelleleilamorel ), with an essay and edited by Paul Roth (@paulrothimc ).
