“The idea of retiring at 65 and living 25 years playing bingo and drinking martinis doesn’t appeal to a lot of people,” said Chip Conley, an author and former hospitality executive who co-founded Modern Elder Academy, which offers retreats and courses devoted to midlife transformation. Conley, who prefers the phrase “regenerative communities” to “retirement communities,” has created shared rental homes near Modern Elder Academy’s New Mexico campus. He hopes the model of companionable co-living they exemplify will inspire a larger movement. Read all about it in my latest piece for @nytimes . Most older Americans want to age in place, according to @aarp . Yet fewer than 4% of American homes have basic accessibility features. Until flexible spaces become the norm, most homeowners will need to retrofit. Unfortunately, fixes like aluminum ramps and grab bars tend to be eyesores. My latest article for @nytimes includes ideas from homeowners and designers who’ve found ways to balance form and function.
