The Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center and Cancer Hope Network have launched Peer Access to Trials, Hope and Support (PATHS), a new peer-to-peer mentorship program designed to support patients and caregivers navigating cancer treatment, survivorship, and clinical trials. Through the program, patients and families will be connected one-on-one with trained peer mentors who have faced cancer themselves, offering guidance, understanding, and support from lived experience. “Clinical trials are critical to advancing cancer care, but too often patients feel unsure or hesitant about participating,” said Karyn Goodman, MD, MS. “Peer support can play a powerful role in giving patients the confidence, perspective, and information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment options.” The PATHS program expands access to emotional and practical support while helping patients better understand the role of clinical trials in cancer care. The inaugural group of peer mentors is currently being trained and will join a national network of volunteers supporting patients through every stage of their journey. At 14 years old, Ravi’s life changed when he began having seizures with no clear answers in sight. After years of searching for a diagnosis in India, his family turned to the Mount Sinai Epilepsy Program for help. Lara Marcuse, MD, confirmed Ravi had epilepsy caused by a small tumor in his left temporal lobe. For years, medications helped control some of the seizures, but Ravi still faced daily episodes while balancing school and everyday life. Everything changed after a frightening seizure while driving prompted Ravi and his family to consider surgery. In an awake brain surgery led by Saadi Ghatan, MD, Ravi successfully had the tumor removed while actively answering questions to protect his language and comprehension. The procedure ended his seizures — and inspired a new purpose. Now pursuing a career in medicine, Ravi hopes to use his experience to raise awareness, fight stigma surrounding epilepsy, and help future patients feel seen and understood. The Mount Sinai Health System has launched the Marilyn Monroe Mental Health for the Arts Program, a new initiative dedicated to supporting the unique mental health needs of the performing arts community. Based within the Samuel J. Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan’s Theater District, the program honors Marilyn Monroe’s legacy and longstanding advocacy for mental health awareness as the world marks what would have been her 100th birthday in 2026. Led by Shilpa R. Taufique, PhD, Chief of the Division of Psychology for the Mount Sinai Health System, the program will provide specialized mental health services for performers, artists, and entertainment professionals while connecting patients to Mount Sinai’s broader network of psychiatric and psychological care. “Creative work asks individuals to draw deeply from their emotional lives,” said Dr. Taufique. “This program recognizes the unique pressures artists face while providing care that supports both their well-being and their artistry.” Read more about this collaborative effort by heading to the link in our bio.

This annual tradition celebrates students whose dedication to research, leadership, mentorship, innovation, and service has made a meaningful impact across our community and the future of medicine and science. The evening reflected the talent, compassion, and commitment that define the graduating Class of 2026. Following the ceremony, graduates, families, mentors, classmates, and friends gathered at the Museum of the City of New York for the Dean’s Reception—an opportunity to celebrate together and reflect on the relationships and experiences that shaped this important milestone. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more than just a reaction to a difficult experience—it involves persistent symptoms like intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened anxiety, and changes in mood that can interfere with daily life. Recognizing when these responses go beyond a typical stress reaction is key to understanding when support may be needed. As Dr. Ashley Doukas explains, effective treatments and resources are available, and seeking help is an important step toward recovery. #WeFindAWay #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #mentalhealth #depression

Over 40 years ago, Daniel’s life changed in an instant. One morning, he casually scratched the tip of his nose and felt a sudden, sharp pain shoot through his teeth. Confused, he went to his dentist, but nothing was wrong. The pain didn’t stop, isolating him from friends and family, and it slowly took over his life. For years, he relied on pain medication for relief, which temporarily helped, but never solved the problem. When the medication stopped working, his concerned daughter began seeking answers, which led them to Joshua Bederson, MD, System Chair of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai. After reviewing Daniel’s symptoms and MRI with added sequences dedicated to look at the trigeminal nerve, Dr. Bederson identified arterial compression of the trigeminal nerve and confirmed that he had trigeminal neuralgia (TGN), a condition that causes severe, debilitating facial pain. Daniel underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery with Dr. Bederson, which successfully relieved the pressure on his trigeminal nerve. Today, Daniel is pain-free, off medication, and back to living his life fully. He credits Dr. Bederson and his team not only for their surgical expertise, but for their compassion and unwavering support along the way. 📞 If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia, you may be a candidate for a definitive procedure. To learn more or schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Bederson’s team at 212-241-2377. #WeFindAWay
