Blending personal narratives and cultural influences, artist Aunia Kahn paints portraiture ripe with symbolism. The gouache works feature female figures surrounded by ornate framing and repeating patterns. Birds and flowers are two of the most prominent symbols, communicating themes of freedom and rebirth. They are universal subjects that have particular significance to Kahn as it relates to her life and artistic journey.
Some habits never leave you. 😍 Since childhood, the floor has been my thinking space, my planning ground, the place where ideas spread out to map future projects and ideas. Today, fresh off a stretch of deadlines, I dropped right back down to it, and this time the work ahead is something I've been quietly building toward for a long time.....
Planning has officially begun for my solo exhibition at @thinkspaceprojects , opening January 2027.
It feels far away until it doesn't. 😅 This is the part of studio life I find deeply sustaining and rewarding. More to come as the work takes shape.
I am so thankful for this incredible opportunity ❤️
Sharing so you can see the size 😍

Working in gouache, acrylic, oil pastel, colored pencil, and hand-painted 3D elements, Michigan-born artist Aunia Kahn @auniakahn creates vibrant, layered compositions that blend personal narrative with rich cultural influences. A difficult upbringing and life-threatening health challenges have played an important role in shaping her practice and studio life:
“My art springs from a deep longing to connect with a world where my presence has been limited. Creativity became my lifeline during two decades of battling an undiagnosed illness. Now, my work reflects a narrative of personal evolution and gratitude for being alive. Rooted in symbolism, through vibrant colors and living beings, it embodies a journey of rebirth and self-discovery.”
Aunia Kahn’s next solo show will be at @thinkspace_art January 2027. See more of her work on our site. Link in bio.
