Life has been an absolute 🌪️ I guess as it always promised to be in this year of the fire horse! After many years of trying but not managing, because we’re both busy ladies, I finally got the chance to work with @ambrevandeberg from @drinkelala talking about whirlwinds, this woman knows how to get things DONE. I hosted a wonderful night for their Community dinners with some exceptional female entrepreneurs. It was a night of good food, good drinks and incredible company. I made: Popadums with sweet potato cavier. Jamaican peppered shrimp dumplings in a bisque with Chandon Beni oil Pikapeppa skewers accompanied by pineapple and cucumber chow, & finally rice and peas All finished off with Tres Lecche with orange zest and finished off with some of that fresh from the Island of spice (Grenada) cinnamon.

Community to us means not only bringing good people and connection together, but also soul food and shared snacks. Huge thanks to @atelier_code_noir for the space and keeping us full. Blessed by chefs @perrine_aguirre_babativa and @lelani_lewis . More to come! 🖤

Yesterday I hosted a beautiful Paint & Heal Ancestral Waters Edition at @atelier_code_noir Noir. The evening began with a lovely diner by Code noir , followed by a workshop surrounded by my exhibition “The weight of gentle things” drawing inspiration from its theme. There were beautiful conversations, shared insights, moments of vulnerability, even a few tears and above all, genuine connection. As I sat there, taking it all in, I felt so grateful for this journey that continues to bring such amazing souls into my life. It’s special to see how my art and the workshops I host with @peindreenkura come together and strengthen each other.

I was talking with my friend @willagreen about visibility recently — how showing up, consistently and boldly, creates real momentum. She’s living it. Watching her campaign for GroenLinks Amsterdam is seriously inspiring. So when she mentioned visibility… I had to laugh. Because how’s THIS for visible 👀 Seeing yourself on a very large poster in Amsterdam is something I won’t forget anytime soon. I’m honoured to be one of 160 Role Models for the @equals.nl campaign, celebrating women across the Netherlands defining success on their own terms. Visibility matters to me every day. It’s why I created Atelier Code Noir — a space for diasporic chefs and artists to share their food, stories, and culture. A place where representation isn’t a bonus — it’s the point. Because visibility isn’t just being seen. It’s building spaces where people can finally feel: this was made for me. When you can see the path, you can walk it. And sometimes, you build it. Thank you Equals for the honour — and Willa for the reminder that showing up is everything 🙌 📸 @carlywollaert ❤️❤️ #RoleModels #Equals #Visibility #AtelierCodeNoir #Representation Amsterdam WomenInLeadership

REMINDER: On 5 March I’ll be opening my exhibition “The Weight of gentle things” at Atelier Code Noir. Yesterday we spent the day in the exhibition space, moving works around, feeling into placement. It’s always special to witness the work outside of the atelier, to see how it starts speaking differently once it’s in dialogue with a space. I would truly love for you to come and experience it. Opening night: 5 March 18:00 – 21:00 Around 19:30 we share a short talk about the exhibition and the process behind The Weight of gentle things. Also excited that we’’ ll be having music by: - @najamac & @j.saoed - dudu drinks, and food hosted by @atelier_code_noir Please RSVP via link in bio, it would really help us a lot with the preparations!!!! We are looking forward to meeting you there, celebrating together, and sharing this body of work with you.

Atelier Code Noir is and will always be a place to show off the plethora of talent of us diasporic kids. A place to share our narratives and sense of belonging with people who just ‘get it’ that ease of belonging is so important to us, because we know how comforting it is. Our first iterations of that expression was through food but we quickly came to realise that the space could open up to way more than that. And that’s why we are embarking on our first residency of diasporic artists, giving them a platform and walls to adorn. Our first is with Noni Madeleine an artist based in Amsterdam. Her work is deeply connected to identity and ancestry, using painting as a spiritual tool to honor personal and ancestral stories. Through her art and workshops, she creates spaces for softness and vulnerability, finding strength and connection in that openness. Her opening exhibition will be in 5th March 18:00-21:00 at Atelier Code Noir. Don’t wait to reserve your place through our link in the bio. Also @nonimadeleine will be bringing other incredible facilitators into the space for some extra programming so keep tuned for more information in the next couple of days.

Introducing the first in our series in which we showcase diasporic artists. Noni Madeleine is an Amsterdam-based artist whose paintings move like water, between worlds, between memory and becoming, between strength and softness. She will be the first artist we welcome to take over Atelier Code Noir and adorn its walls with her art. Her exhibition ‘The Weight of Gentle Things’ will open on 5th March, 18:00-21:00, with food, wine and music. With Curaçaoan and Dutch roots, water has always carried a double meaning for Noni: the thing that separates and the thing that connects. Her paintings hold that tension and find beauty in it. This is art as ancestral honoring. As spiritual practice. As proof that the in-between can be a place of power. Don’t worry if you miss the opening exhibition, we’ll be announcing her opening schedule in the next few days as long as the amazing programming days she’ll be bringing to the space. Stay with us as we continue to spotlight voices shaping the diaspora. 🖤 #AtelierCodeNoir #DiasporicArtists #NoniMadeleine #TheWeightOfGentleThings
