In While True # Loop Forever, I used a British Telecom push-button phone, rewired so that it plays imagibed voicemails from 1987–2002 on a loop. The voices belong to families, friends, and lovers who might have lived in this building during that 15-year span, speaking about everyday life and fleeting personal concerns. I drew inspiration from Robert Pirsig’s idea that technology and the human spirit are not opposites but fused, and from Cyprien Gaillard who looks at ruins and how systems outlive us. Inside the phone, its hidden circuits, wires, and speakers echo the invisible systems -social, emotional, technological-that both sustain and control us. Like buildings, technology is emotional because of the humans who pass through it.
I had to learn coding and building circuits using microcontrollers to create this work. Concepts I had never known, or was really interested in. Showcasing my first piece of work, I did not only want to show the process, the unseen bits, but also ‘forced’ myself into living it for 2 months, to learn a language from scratch.
Now here are the unseen bits of my work:
thank you

@kaya_oguz thank you for my first bits of coding when I was 11, making me practise in my pink fuzzy notebook. (Credits to my mommy
@ceydaduru1 who found this notebook in 3 minutes this morning, the archiving queen herself, inspiring everything I am doing)
