Àsìkò is a Nigerian artist based in London, expresses his exploration of identity, culture, and heritage through a blend of photography and mixed media. His work, which intricately combines adornment, choreographed movement, symbolism, and alluring settings, has been showcased in prestigious galleries worldwide, including the British Film Institute, Paris, and London. Drawing from his exposure to Nigerian art and his journey from Nigeria to England, Àsìkò employs photography to document his encounters with displacement and acculturation. Àsìkò is a conceptual photographer whose practice is anchored by the interpolation of his emotional experiences as a Nigerian born (and raised) British citizen, into a life-long cultural and spiritual exploration of his Yoruba heritage. Àsìkò’s work is motivated by his drive for greater self-awareness, authentic creative expression and therefore the development of a visual language that articulates new ways to understand the liberatory possibilities of African diasporic identity. Àsìkò’s images seek to instigate conversations with the audience that help to negotiate some of the ethical contradictions inherent within modern permutations of Yoruba culture. This is because his approach is grounded in a commitment to honour and enrich the relevance of this vast knowledge system and philosophy to the wider contemporary global society. Àsìkò achieves this by employing an intrinsically sensual and feminist approach that centres the body as the subject through which he generates ideas about gendered power dynamics and violence, the limits of femininity and masculinity, spirituality and beauty, our relationship to nature and ultimately belonging. Um dom será devolvido MemÓRÍa Um altar na cabeça que guarda as histórias, como um álbum dinâmico de fotografia em imagens, lembranças, sabedorias, andanças, magias. Neste lugar morto tem vida Limpa, defuma, joelho na terra, firma uma vela em homenagem a calma necessária que é imprescindível para manter equilibrado seu mundo vivo. Corpo é terreiro, altar, casa de ancestral que reina onde lá no topo, a cabeça-cumeeira sabe respeitar e alcançar o que lhe é proposto. As tradições africanas de um modo geral entendem o corpo como um território, um portal com muitas entradas e saídas, onde o alto da cabeça é a principal e deve ser mantida em profundos cuidados e em absoluto, sempre protegida. É assim que as mais velhas ensinam, o pano que cobre a cabeça tem funções diversas, todas firmadas num eixo central, proteção ancestral aos seres da terra. Herdeiro desta travessia Orí surge na cosmoperspectiva africana, para além de um paradigma conceitual, somos mais do que imagem e semelhança, somos a viva lembrança, um ser espiritual. memória é uma potência, que atravessa a temporalidade da consciência, ao passo que por dentro do eu-profundo não há muro entre passado-presente- futuro. Reverenciar nossa memória individual e coletiva, de forma alguma é sobre ficar com o que restou do passado em nossa vida, memória tem vida, o que aconteceu não morreu com a partida, sobretudo quando há uma ligação espírito-biológica com essa memória, mesmo depois de morto, a ciência prova através de um exame de DNA o que tem ligação com o corpo. Acredito que uma das maiores mazelas do sincretismo religioso inerente a nossa espiritualidade não é o santo ou ritual, é pensar a partir do padrão do outro pois isso confunde o bem mais precioso, a ideia de superar a morte terrena. Não se supera a falta física de um ente querido, se transforma em culto, sem isso Ori fica sem rumo, perdido.
