At ART X Lagos 2025, we joined photographer, curator, and writer, Akinbode Akinbiyi (@akinbodeakinbiyi ) in conversation where he reflected on a photographic practice shaped by time, movement, and the discipline of observation—across Nigeria and beyond. Drawing on the enduring influence of the legendary figure who anchored the ART X ICON Exhibition, J.D. ’Okhai Ojeikere, Akinbiyi spoke to a way of seeing rooted in cultural documentation and a commitment to recording the textures of everyday life. Moderated by ART X Lagos’ Curator-at-Large, Missla Libsekal (@misslalibsekal ), the conversation considered what it takes to sustain a creative practice over time. The RESONANCE Residency returns for its second edition following a powerful inaugural year that saw three Nigerian creative practitioners, Anthony Ogochukwu Agbapuonwu (@tonyola_007 ), Mobolaji Ogunrosoye (@also_known_as_bojj ) and Olorunfemi Adewuyi (@olorunfemi.adewuyi ), travel from Lagos to Paris for three months of research and artistic development. ART X Lagos, the Cité internationale des arts (@citedesartsparis ) in Paris and the Embassy of France in Nigeria / Institut Français du Nigeria (@ifnigeria ) co-constructed the three-month annual residency programme for visual artists, curators, and designers based in Nigeria. Initiated in 2020 by both Cité internationale des arts and the Embassy of France in Nigeria, the programme aims to facilitate conversation and expand the professional networks of practitioners within the Nigerian art scene. RESONANCE creates space for practices to evolve, fostering meaningful exchange between local perspectives and global conversations. Applications are now open to visual artists, curators, and designers living and working in Nigeria. Apply and learn more via the link in bio. #Resonance2026 #ARTXLagos #ArtistResidency

During ART X Lagos 2025, the artists selected for the fifth iteration of Art Across Borders (AAB): Kudzanai Chiurai, Fatoumata Diabaté (@fdiabate ), Edson Chagas (@edsonschagas ), Nicène Kossentini, Mário Macilau, and Camille Chedda (@camillechedda ), took part in a mini-residency that unfolded across Lagos. Over several days, they moved through studios, museums, and everyday spaces, engaging the city as both context and collaborator. Through conversation and encounters, they navigated the city and shared reflections on place, perception, and belonging in line with the AAB exhibition theme, “We Are Where We Think, (We Are).” With visits to cultural institutions like Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization, one-on-one studio engagements with legendary artist, Pa Bruce Onobrakpeya, open market explorations and more, the mini-residency positioned our Lagos as a site of learning and imagination. At its core, Art Across Borders is a movement — across regions, ideas, and lived realities — where artists reclaim place, assert agency, and collectively imagine futures yet to be formed. Art Across Borders in partnership with @afreximbank through the patronage of the Afreximbank Art Program, is curated by Jumoke Sanwo (@jumokesanwo ). Moments from ART X Lagos 2025. Between the artworks, it was the people—the conversations, the connections, the way the fair was experienced—that brought the fair to life. #ARTXLagos2025 #10X #ADecadeofARTX #ArtFair

To end Women’s Month, we’re spotlighting our visit to She-nergy II at Alliance Française Lagos (@af.lagos ), an exhibition that continues to centre and amplify the voices of emerging female artists within the contemporary landscape. Bringing together works by Yewande Ambeke (@ambeke ), Titilayo Abdulrazaq (@titilayo_meena ), Falilat Ibrahim (@sculptor_falilat ), Chinecherem Peace Ifedilichukwu (@necheremifedili ), Nengi Uranta (@nengusarts ), Ashiata Shaibu (@_ashiata ), Taiwo Aiyedogbon (@taiwoaiyedogbon ), Korede Aremo (@koredearemo_art ), Lilian Amaghiro (@makalilian ), and Caroline Useh (@caroline_useh ), the exhibition explored the nuances of womanhood through diverse mediums and visual languages—each work contributing to an evolving dialogue on identity, representation, and social transformation. Moving beyond observation, She-nergy II, curated by Ladunni Lambo (@ladunnilamboofficial ), reflected the power of the female gaze as an active force that shapes narratives, builds community, and reimagines possibilities for the future. #ARTXVisits #WomensMonth

In this video, RESONANCE laureate, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, reflects on her ongoing project Contrasting Loveliness, where self-portraiture becomes a way of examining the contradictions that shape womanhood. Working across collage and photography, the Lagos-based artist explores perception through distortion—manipulating paper, lenses, and layered imagery to reveal the many ways women are seen, and see themselves. Through material experimentation, her practice embraces the unexpected - finding beauty in disruption, and meaning in the act of “making a mess”. Filmed during the residency in Paris, organised by ART X Lagos, Cité internationale des arts (@citedesartsparis ) and the French Embassy in Nigeria (@franceinnigeria ), Mobolaji also shares how the experience offered time for reflection, experimentation, and renewed clarity.
