True to this, not new to this 🫶🏾 Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about my younger self: the pre-braces little Arielle with a beautiful front-yard garden who loved to sing and wanted to write books & create her own clothing line. The one who saw a problem and immediately wanted to take steps to fix it. She LOVED this beautiful planet, and loved imagining what it would be like to travel the world and see all of its beauty & wonder. This video is from 4th grade when I collected almost 1,000 hats, scarves, gloves, and socks for all the elementary schools in my district because I hated seeing kids walking to school and freezing in the winter. My hometown has since institutionalized this effort with an annual coat drive for elementary school students. That year, I was selected as one of the area’s “13 Kids Who Care” and the producers learned that I’d just advocated for my school to start celebrating Earth Day by planting trees. Anyone can be an agent for change. We all just have to take an extra moment to listen and observe the world around us. Times are bleak, but I’m so inspired by the actions of people who continue to care. I’m inspired by my younger self. I can’t let her down.

📚🎙👩🏾‍💻🌳📹🌍🎧 I get lots of questions about where to start to learn more about environmental justice and environmental racism, so I’ve put together a little list of some books, webinars, podcasts, articles, and other resources. The link to the Google doc is in my bio ✨ This was a very random project I did in the middle of the night a few days ago so it is far from complete. I’ll be updating it regularly as I come across more useful information, and recall sources that I’ve learned from over the years. Looking forward to continuing to tear down ivory towers 💗education is for everyone! Also all the books are linked to sites that are not Amazon on purpose. If you can find them at a local bookstore, that’s great too! CC: Gorgeous gorgeous girls learn about climate & environmental justice so they can do their part to protect people and planet. Link in bio!

On Earth Day I had the honor of delivering a keynote at @mtholyoke on climate optimism, radical imagination, and youth activism. Between meeting so many brilliant students, recording an episode of the @sustainablemhc podcast the next day, learning about local geology, my dad coming to hear me speak, and being back in the Berkshires, this was easily one of my favorite keynotes I’ve done in a while. As I shared in the keynote: despite the federal rollbacks and all the hardships that have followed, to be an environmentalist, still here, and engaging in the fight to protect people and the planet is a tremendous honor that I don’t take lightly. Grateful, as always 💚

May 1st 🖤 “We are citizens of a country that stands on the wrong side of every liberation struggle on Earth. Feel what that means.” - Audre Lorde Labor rights have always been central to the fight for environmental justice, which aims to create safe places for everyone to live, work, and play. Our individual actions do have power, and they’re strengthened when we do them as a collective.

Last week I had the pleasure of leading a program during the National Academy of Medicine’s Climate & Health Summit, highlighting the stories of brilliant leaders who have accepted the call to a career at the intersections of climate change & health. Grateful for the power of storytelling to shift culture & all the rooms being a curious person has allowed me to enter. Little Arielle who sat in the back of her mom’s health workshops & advocated for her elementary school to start celebrating Earth Day would be so proud 💚
