Join us on March 31 for a special screening and conversation about housing affordability in Alberta. The evening features a screening of @studio_north “The Space We Create” documentary, a film that chronicles the story of The Aster — a 33-home attainable housing development led by @banfftown designed to expand homeownership in one of Canada’s most constrained housing markets. Following the screening, we’ll hear insights from @sait ‘s Affordable Housing Modelling and Analysis research examining @attainablehomes model and bring together a panel of experts to explore what these two made-in-Alberta projects can teach us about addressing housing affordability challenges in Calgary and across Alberta. Both projects were supported by the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.

We’re proud to share that mddl and the Municipality of Jasper have launched the Jasper Housing Enablement Initiative: a 16-month collaboration focused on practical, community-fit housing solutions. The Initiative brings together GIS-based lot analysis, policy and process review, and practical capacity-building tools to support missing middle housing and infill over time. As a municipality located within a national park, Jasper faces unique constraints like limited land supply, a strong year-round workforce, and a planning framework that demands precision and care. Housing pressures in Jasper aren’t new, but they have been intensified since the wildfire. It’s also clear the need for better tools, clearer processes, and shared understanding about what’s possible in small-scale development is a key lever to unlock more housing in the town. This work focuses on the how of infill: helping residents, builders, and the municipality navigate opportunities with more certainty and less friction. As mddl, our role is to support the ecosystem around housing delivery, connecting policy intent to real-world outcomes through data, design, and local capacity. Funded by the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, this project will produce tools that support long-term affordability and resilience, while respecting Jasper’s character and stewardship responsibilities. More to come as pur collaboration unfolds.

Leadership Update at the Alberta Real Estate Foundation We’re pleased to welcome Melanie Hulsker as the new Chair of our Board of Governors. Now entering her second term on the Board, Melanie brings deep expertise in community development and systems-level thinking from her work at the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary. Known for her collaborative approach and systems thinking, Melanie has already been a driving force in shaping the Foundation’s strategy and impact. We’d also like to express our sincere thanks to Penny Omell, who served as Chair from 2023–2025 and now steps into the Past Chair role.
