This is the story of five competitive people who are passionate about their trade #HereAtSAIT and strive for excellence — what’s not to love? ✨
WorldSkills 2026, set in Shanghai, China, is an elite showcase of what young apprentices and tradespeople can do. The competition will require an incredible amount of dedication and discipline in September with four days of intense focus and hands-on work (double the two days required at nationals).
We’re thrilled to cheer on five competitors from SAIT on Team Canada. ⬇️

This winter, students from the Fitness and Wellness Management program #HereAtSAIT crossed the Atlantic, trading Calgary’s snow for Ireland’s moody fog, dramatic landscapes and historic architecture.
With stops in Dublin, Thurles, Athlone and Galway, students participated in cultural experiences and connected with peers at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), which offers a 2+2 option to our students — they can complete a two-year SAIT diploma and transfer into a two-year degree in strength and conditioning with TUS.
While there, visitors from SAIT:
🧠 Participated in lectures and practical labs on topics like diabetes management, strength training, plyometrics and functional movement screening
🥅 Cheered from the bleachers while watching national hurling and Gaelic football matches
🏛️ Toured the grand halls of Trinity College
🏞️ Visited castles, cathedrals, botanical gardens and the iconic Cliffs of Moher
🎻 Enjoyed two weeks of cultural immersion.
This is just one of the many ways SAIT and TUS work together following a three-year collaborative agreement to foster a cooperative relationship between the two institutions.
SAIT brought the heat to Provincial Skills in Edmonton this week, sweeping podiums and showing how our students and apprentices can compete.🔥
A few numbers to highlight SAIT’s impressive performance: ⬇️
🧑🔧 64 students and apprentices competing
🏅 41 medals: 13 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze
🏆 6 podium sweeps: Baking, Culinary, Industrial Control, Industrial Mechanics, IT Office Software Applications and Mechatronics
SAIT’s 13 gold medalists will now compete at the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto on May 28–29.
At Skills competitions, high school and post-secondary students and apprentices take hands-on challenges reflecting real-world industry standards. Competitors are evaluated on technical ability, precision, safety, problem-solving and employability skills.
SAIT’s five WorldSkills 2026 competitors were also in attendance, with four participating in mock competitions as preparation for Shanghai. They were joined by competitors from China, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Taiwan, Spain and the United States, who travelled to Edmonton to take part — a strong showcase of international collaboration.
Big kudos to everyone involved — including the competitors, alumni volunteers and instructors who make this impressive event a success every year.

If there’s a problem, students at SAIT will help solve it. 😎
In their schools’ capstone project showcases, students presented creative and strategic projects to solve real-world challenges or gaps they identified in Calgary.
Some projects were created in partnership with industry partners, while others were identified through market research. In any case, CapCon demonstrated how SAIT’s multi-disciplinary and hands-on approach to learning equips students for the world of work.
Kudos to all involved in a vibrant showcase of student success #HereAtSAIT!

May 5 is Red Dress Day. Garments displayed across campus honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+) and serve as a powerful reminder of the lasting impacts of colonization.
Natoysopoyiis, SAIT’s Indigenous student resource centre, commemorated the day with a special beading workshop where participants created their own red dress pins.
Today, we pause to recognize the ongoing injustice, remember those lost and advocate for change.

What an opportunity for future talent #HereAtSAIT!
This week, as part of our Youth Initiatives programming, junior high students visited the Art Smith Aero Centre for SAIT’s Exploring Aviation Day, where they spent a full day engaging in hands-on learning and exploring aviation careers.
Students rotated through interactive stations in aircraft maintenance, avionics, structures and drone technology, while also connecting directly with industry professionals during a hangar showcase.
With strong attendance from female students, the day reflected SAIT’s commitment to expanding access and representation in aviation careers.
The future of aviation is taking off, and it’s more inclusive than ever. ✈️

Two years ago, Culinary Arts student Erik Hansen cooked his way to the top at a competition in France. Now a SAIT grad, he’s still winning — most recently in Turkey. 🏆 👨🍳
SAIT Culinary Arts instructors Chef Manuel Panfili and Chef Andrew Springett provided Erik with on-campus training sessions before he travelled abroad and snagged first place at the 49th International Final of the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition, held at Le Cordon Bleu Istanbul on April 18.
Erik’s SAIT status might have changed, but the support from SAIT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism hasn’t.
“After school, if you want to keep competing, it’s a lot more on your hands and that can be a big struggle,” he says.
“I kind of started competing through SAIT, so it really means a lot that they continued supporting my practice sessions.”
In addition to coming first out of 23 competitors from around the world, Erik was awarded the Wüsthof Kitchen Quality Award, a distinction earned by the competitor who achieves the highest score in foundational kitchen skills like cleanliness.
The black box cooking competition meant some of the ingredients he’d need to incorporate in his appetizer, main dish and dessert were revealed only minutes before the start. These included artichokes, macadamia nuts, eggplant and bluefish. A team of professional judges awarded him the win.
In addition to the trophy, Erik also received a scholarship to study in Paris courtesy of Le Cordon Bleu, a knife set, a five-year membership in La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs (an international association focused on gastronomy) and a cash prize.
Erik’s great success abroad is not only a feather in his cap — it shows support from instructors can extend beyond graduation #HereAtSAIT.
“Development doesn’t stop at school. He has the drive and the passion for this, and I felt that continued mentorship could push him even further,” says Chef Manuel.
