Ansh Gupta + Kevin Buschmann | UA | Year 3 | Comprehensive Design 2: ARCH 302 | Spring 2025 | Prof. Andrew Lyon
The spring semester third-year studio focused on Co-housing and Co-living in Brooklyn, exploring the political, social, and formal dimensions of shared domesticity. Students investigated Co-housing typologies, including single-parent, multi-generational, and live/work paradigms, questioning traditional housing conventions by integrating public and semi-public programs within shared residential spaces. Design exercises addressed social interactions across scales, encouraging innovation in shared living environments.
The studio tasked students with designing a 60-80-bedroom Co-housing complex in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Projects examined emerging social models and user groups, proposing programmatic opportunities for cooperation. Students researched contemporary theories on social structures and boundaries to inform their designs, which integrated architectural, ecological, and technical systems.
With guidance from professional consultants, students implemented sustainable strategies aligned with PlanNYC 2030 and the Greater Green Buildings Plan. The semester culminated in proposals that combined innovative building systems, materiality, and cultural responsiveness, addressing the challenges of sustainable, community-focused urban living.

Intermediate Design II - Vertical Paradigms and Adaptations - BArch Y2 SP24 Final.
Project Title: Intersecting Dualities
“Inspired by Steven Holl’s Simmons Hall, my project focuses on incorporating two facades that oppose each other in terms of form and materiality. It features a shared main circulation with the Webster Library in New York City, serving as an expansion to this existing structure. I intended on creating flexible floor plans that flow according to the efficient program division rather than being contained within a boundary. Therefore, this system helps to achieve a visually interlocking effect between the two facades, with the structured grid ‘piercing’ through the organic skin.”
