I was so honoured and excited to be able to work with my all-time favourite creative collaborator again, for the first time in years: thank you, Marin, for bringing this song back to life with such beautiful imagery and heart-wrenching narrative.
When I wrote this song, years ago, I was not in a good place, and seeing the creation of this wonderful, warm bed of visuals, upon which my younger voice can rest, is so healing for me.
I’m always reluctant to share the music I used to make so much of, as it is so far from who I am today: I was so focused on men who caused me pain, so degrading towards myself. But in a conversation I had about this new video, someone very wise reminded me of something:
“Not everything has to be feminist, it’s a song about losing someone and the music video reflects that […] I think art is reflecting emotions and experiences a lot of the time and most of your life has been pretty unfeminist, in that you’ve been mistreated by men, so it will show that. But your art and illustrations that reflect your newfound thoughts, opinions and healing are feminist. I think it’s important to remember that your art is for you, no one else.“
I was so grateful to be given these profound words. Whilst my art is for me, I am always happy to be able to share it with the world - and any catharsis, inspiration or pleasure anyone else is able to take from it is an added bonus. Thank you to this video and its creators for giving me this newfound appreciation of my old songs and the younger version of myself who wrote them. It is the best gift.
