Archer Office is excited to have been announced as the successful tenderer for Lead Architect Design Services for the Carriageworks Bays and Tracks Upgrade project. The Project will enable delivery of live music, performance, events and activation for up to 5,000 people within these significant, State Heritage-listed buildings. Carriageworks was built between 1880 and 1889 as part of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. In 2007, the site was redeveloped as a cultural precinct, with the design lead by architects, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer. These works included adaptive reuse and major new works to create multiple performance venues, predominantly throughout the Eastern half of the Carriageworks building. Remaining spaces were retained in near-original condition, and have been used for various temporary events including for art, music, fashion and markets. The Carriageworks Bays and Tracks Upgrade project will install permanent infrastructure required to improve the amenity, safety and performance of events like these going forward. We look forward to working with Create NSW, Carriageworks and our collaborating consultant team to realise the next phase in the evolution of this significant cultural institution!

We are thrilled to share a few photos from the recent opening of the new Mark Taylor Oval Pavilion at Waitara Park in Hornsby, officially opened by former Australian cricket captain, Mark Taylor AO. @marktaylorofficial Mark played with Northern District Cricket Club after moving to Sydney as a teenager. He was Test opening batsman from 1988 to 1999, as well as captain from 1994 to 1999, succeeding Allan Border. Mark retired in 1999 and was awarded Australian of the Year the same year, recognising his significant contribution to Australian culture. We are honoured to have designed this pavilion dedicated in his name. Rather than demolish the existing grandstand, our proposal introduces a ‘complementary twin’ to sit respectfully alongside the existing building. The new building provides community facilities including an elevated club and community room, with kiosk, public amenities and support spaces opening on all sides. By retaining the existing building that has served the community since 1929, the available budget was consolidated towards providing durable facilities for the next 100 years! We wish to thank our Clients, Northern District Cricket Club and Hornsby Council; Head Contractor, Westbury Constructions; Project Manager Mostyn Copper; Structural Engineers, Eckersley O’Callaghan; Services Engineers, Evolved Engineering; and Heritage consultants, Heritage 21. Congratulations to Archer Office for their project Allan Border Oval Pavilion which has received a Commendation for Public Architecture at the National Architecture Awards. Jury citation: "In the Allan Border Oval Pavilion, refined, sophisticated and elegant simplicity is exemplified in plan, section, volume and material composition, to create a piece of community sporting infrastructure that is sure to be an enduring precedent for Australian suburbs. The pavilion’s grandstand, cafe, multifunctional space and changerooms are expertly woven together under the most elegant of parasols to create hard-working social infrastructure that is much more than the sum of its parts. This fabulous yet functional “great room” has become the location of choice for local spectators, yoga groups, community meetings and anything else the community can dream up. Much more than a grandstand and locker room, the Alan Border Oval Pavilion is modest in relation to its neighbours, generous to the community, and spectacular in anchoring its sideline presence. It has quickly become integral to the fabric of the community." Congratulations to Archer Office for their project Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct which has received a Commendation for Interior Architecture at the National Architecture Awards. Jury citation: "This adaptive reuse project unites the 1892 Boot Factory and its sister Mill Hill building as a shared civic hub for community and council. A new link consolidates services, storage and lift access, liberating the factory’s interiors for active public use. Spaces have been carefully reworked to uncover hidden qualities and enrich the heritage fabric. New elements, finely crafted in timber and brass, complement the existing character while culminating in roof forms that elevate the buildings’ civic presence. With a focus on retention, prefabrication and minimising waste, the result is a sustainable, enduring and community-centred civic landmark."
