APSA students connected with planners from across the country and explored real-world challenges at the APA National Planning Conference in Detroit.
APSA funded 15 undergraduate students to attend with support from alumni, donors, Associated Students Inc. at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design URP department. Combined with graduate and self-funded students, CPP was strongly represented with 34 students total!
We conducted a post-trip surveyâhere are a few standout experiences:
⪠âCommunity Hubs of the Future was an interactive workshop where I worked in a group to redesign bus stops into a mobility hub. This helped me understand the concept of the mobility hub, which I had previously discounted as just a fancy name for a transit center.â
⪠âAn Even Better Way to Zone was a great session. Focusing on how to make language in zoning code more focused on what can be done, rather than what canât.â
⪠âAs a student planner working on complete streets in the Inland Empire, one panel that had a profound impact on me was called Complete Streets Means Trucks, Too!â
⪠âI went to a really cool one about how the City of Boiseâs Planning Department made a comic book to educate the public on zoning!!â
⪠âConnecting with Aditi Galande had a strong impact on me because her connections with AIA and APA and interdisciplinary background showed me it is possible to be involved in both the Architecture and Urban Planning field.â
Beyond sessions, the impact of this trip extended to student confidence, access, and professional identity:
⪠âNPC is a great way to get students out of the California planning bubble and learn about unique issues and strategies in other US cities.â
⪠âThis conference changed my life⌠I never could have imagined something like this would be possible for someone like me.â
⪠âIt strengthened bonds between cohorts⌠I got to see a city I wouldâve never explored through a new Planning perspective.â
If you supported this effort during Broncos Give, THANK YOU. Your support directly enabled access to this experience â see the attached infographic for proof!
Thank you to everyone who came out to the banquet â nearly 100 students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the department filled the room. The energy, enthusiasm, and support for one another made the night special.

What a time at the APA National Planning Conference in Detroit.
Ideas, conversations, case studies, mobile workshops, networking. Transportation, housing, equity, policy. CPP was well represented and we are excited to bring these ideas into practice here in California! Plus â what a cool city.
Huge thanks to @goocta for inviting us out to a walking tour of the OC Streetcar!
We had a great time seeing the project up close, learning the details behind the design and operations, and getting all of our (many) questions answered.
Itâs exciting to see this level of investment in transit, and weâre looking forward to the day we can ride it ourselves.

35 future planners visited CPP on Thursday!
CPP Urban & Regional Planning students hosted Long Beach youth from @lbc_design for a full day introduction to urban planning â panel discussions with alumni, a campus tour, and student-led conversations about what itâs like to study planning.
Topics ranged from transportation projects to community design, with hands-on activities (including planning-themed Jenga) to keep things interactive.
Big thanks to URP student organizers & volunteers, alumni panelists, and Long Beach Community Design Center @lbc_design who made this visit possible.
