10ᵉ Biënnale van de Schilderkunst 28.06.2026 – 18.10.2026 _________ Ontdek wekelijks drie kunstenaars van de 10ᵉ Biënnale van de Schilderkunst. Richard Artschwager (RRM) In zijn ‘Crate’ sculpturen creëert Richard Artschwager (1923-2013) transportkisten als autonome objecten. Hun ruwe, functionele uiterlijk verbergt volumes die verwijzen naar kunst, meubels of architectuur. De kisten balanceren tussen sculptuur, gebruiksvoorwerp en metafoor voor de kunstwereld. Door hun geslotenheid en schaal confronteren ze de kijker met perceptie en verwachting. Artschwager speelt met humor en ambiguïteit en ondergraaft vaste categorieën, zonder expliciete symboliek of uitleg: voor hem situeert kunst zich op het niveau van directe, fysieke waarneming. Enk De Kramer (mudel) Hoewel kunstenaar Enk De Kramer (1946-2024) vooral de etspers hanteert, moet zijn oeuvre van monotype etsen eerder binnen de schilderkunst worden gezien. In zijn gelaagde composities uit de jaren ’80 en ’90, mede beïnvloed door zijn eerste studies in textielkunst, experimenteert hij met het over elkaar drukken van etsplaten en het toevoegen van extrapicturale middelen zoals andere papiersoorten en puur carborundum. Lubaina Himid (MDD) Het werk van Lubaina Himid (1954) wordt gekenmerkt door portretten en geënsceneerde scènes met gedurfde patronen en levendige kleuren. Ze stelt de westerse schildertraditie in vraag om zo eer te betuigen aan ongehoorde stemmen. Ze breidt die uit door ook gebruik te maken van gevonden materialen zoals laden, deuren, stokken en rechtopstaande silhouetten. The exhibition brings together seven large-scale outdoor sculptures that reflect the artist’s enduring commitment to representing the human figure in its contemporary condition. Opening June 28th, the 10th edition of the Biennial of Painting at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens will gather contemporary artists who explore painting without painting. Textile, ceramic, glass, wax, plastic, beads or stone are among the materials artists use to escape the modern pictorial space and its correlated notions of autonomy and separation. By endorsing ancestral techniques associated with craft and tradition, artists explore ways to step aside from compromised emancipatory ideals to find new modes of connection and question hierarchies. MDD is a community-rooted museum created by and from local artists and patrons along the Lys River. Its commitment to regional specificity does not insulate it. On the contrary, it enables it to create its own center of gravity to better welcome and explore others’.
