Mierle Laderman Ukekes isn't well known outside the art world, partly because the media deemed her a "trash artist" due to her long standing artist residency at the Department of Sanitation --now going on for 40 years +.
But her work is much more radical than it appears. She singlehandedly invented a genre of art--Maintenance Art--after recognizing the invisible labor of mothers, then expanded that scope to encompass NYC's Sanmen after they were scapegoated during the 1970s fiscal crisis. Then she broadened it to the Earth, as evident in her work at Fresh Kills. A pioneer in social practice performance art, Mierle invoked care and collaboration into her art before this was mainstream. Whoever says that art doesn't impact lives hasn't met Mierle.
