Almost 20 years to the date after All Your Faded Things came out - the incredible human @wailingaaronjennings showed up at my show in Missoula (last week) with 5 special lathe cuts he made of his favorite songs from the album as a gift. This album is hard to find (I only have one cd left myself!) and was never released on vinyl. It was cosmic magic timing - and gave us some ideas for honoring it more. Hello! This week marks my one year “deaf-a-versary” - yes that’s right- one year ago I was stricken with sudden deafness in my left ear - clinically called SSHL or Sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Google it and stay informed! It’s been a wild ride. Above are pieces of my 2026 manifest collage made in January. 2025 was full of political chaos - as we know - and I spent the second half tossed around the health care system - misdiagnosed by Gen Z doctors eager to blurt out various life altering conditions I don’t actually have. I feel fine. My left ear sings to me now- and Chirps and buzzes- like a radio looking for a signal- a Theramin- air conditioners - white noise. I don’t hate it weirdly- as something who has spent so much time synth tweaking- the human brain is fascinating. We hear with our brains. I’ve learned a lot - slowed down- I do lots of Qi Gong daily with my favorite YouTube monk - Brother Insight. I can sing and dream and compose - my life is in mono now and a bit softer. I don’t push it. Plus- I got tenure- I’ve been healing through recording space lady style synth covers - trying a new synth divination show out - eliminating, breathing, listening , slowing down - life is good. Love and frequencies.

I interviewed @annaoxygen & @bandinthailand for Third Place Zine’s “Movement Building” issue to commemorate the formative spaces and communities that’ve shaped their creative careers.
It had been a minute since I worked on a print piece (now print is sexier than ever), and I’m grateful for this opportunity to dive deep in conversation with artists I’ve admired for nearly two decades who are still creating fervently.

Joe is the co-founder & CEO of @withfriends_events , a platform spotlighting and supporting third places in several cities across the U.S. (Fun fact!: Joe and I worked at Brooklyn DIY shows organized by @todd_patrick back in the late ‘00s.)

Elana Mann is an artist and activist who explores the power of the collective voice, the embodiment of language, and deafness. Mann is Hard of Hearing and for twenty years she has researched the act of listening through sculpture, sound, works on paper, and public performances.
Anna Oxygen @annaoxygen is a local pop hero, sound and performance phenomenon, and Assistant Professor of Digital Arts at Hamilton College.
