With contributions by Mahdi Sabbagh, Hamza Hamouchene, Public Works, Hussein Chaabane, Hisham Younes, Nadine El-Khoury, Michelle Eid, and Munira Khayyat, EcoRove’s Land Keepers Reader brings together writers, activists, journalists, farmers, and ecologists from across Bilad al-Sham — Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine — to tell stories of green resistance in the Jabal al-Sheikh ecological zone. This font was made from the design of protest signs used during an important and historic event in queer liberation. By sourcing letters from the handwritten signs, the font looks to historicize and reenact this critical event in the ACT UP Timeline. This publication also reprints the first section of the FDA Action Handbook. From the essay: "Typesetting this book from the hand-drawn signs used during the Seize Control of the FDA action is my way of honoring and activating this archival material. Every time this typeset is used, it acts as a memorial in honor of our queer and trans ancestors who fought for the lifesaving medication we have today. The connection between the design and text is crucial. Design is a powerful tool for the creation of radical content rather than a tool for those with power and resources. This is obvious in the many powerful graphics created by ACT UP during its years of activism. Manifesto, Profit-for-Survival was first written for Towards a Self-Sustaining Publishing Model, a panel created by Be Oakley with Marc Fischer, Vivian Sming, Yuri Ogita, and Devin Troy Strother as part of the 2021 Printed Matter Virtual Art Book Fair. This Manifesto looks at the word profit through an anti-capital lens from the perspective of small and self-publishing practices. From the manifesto, Oakley states: What do we mean when we say “profit” (in the not-for-profit to for-profit spectrum)? As a person trying to live off the “profit” they generate from their work, profit is essential to my livelihood and my ability to continue producing work I am passionate about. So, to say that I am a for-profit does not yet speak to the complexities of a minor, non-capitalist publishing project. The word “profit” without any other context is a simplification; it can’t speak to the complexities of what making a profit means for my life, work, and future. GenderFail is not not-for-profit but profit-for-survival, or profit-to-continue-our-work-without-other-means-of-capital -- and most importantly, to make money for the people I publish, to create profit-for-labor.
