Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell is one of the most well known users of this big red pitch pedal called the “Digitech whammy.”
For the Into the Void episode about Pantera, I had the idea to do a string quartet style arrangement for 3 loud guitars with whammy’s and automate the pitch via midi so I could have precise control over the harmony, create fretless, “string-like” glides that evoke Texas and also pay tribute to the tone and style of one of my Guitar Heroes, Dimebag Darrell.
I asked my childhood friend Payson Power from the band Tomb Mold, and Michael Catano from the band North of America to join in.
I think it’s an interesting clash of neo-classical, heavy metal, post-rock and film scores that’s never really been done before.
Into the Void is a Hulu docuseries from Vice Studios that explores the untold history and emotional sagas of heavy metal artists. The eight-part series aims to go beyond the music to reveal the deeper, more human stories of trauma, loss, identity, and resilience behind some of metal’s most misunderstood figures.

Brendan Philip (@unltdltd.space ) returns with “The Witness!” The pandemic really put a damper on my producing/co-writing, so when we all emerged, Bren told me his desire to make some psych/soul songs. I was stoked because I had just finished Territories and bought every fuzz pedal. Our first day in the studio, I asked him if he was up for trying a little writing game: a songwriting idea that I was adapting from screen writing. He was and it really worked. We were able to write 8 songs in about 8 x2 hour sessions that were beyond anything either of us had done before. The last few months we’ve been honing the production and mix and got to meet and collaborate with two phenomenal artists @wildblackmusic and @tukuismusic . The record will get released soon, but this is “The Witness.” What you get when two boys that love Radiohead and Zamrock get the keys to the studio. It also marks my return to making music videos and this one was shot in the dirtiest motel with an infrared camera. The Witness will see it all and so can you! Thanks for listening! ❤️
