This week the Angel Shark Project and partners are attending the 15th Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (@cms.migratory.species CMS COP15) in Campo Grande, Brazil This international forum brings together government representatives, scientists, and organizations from around the world to provide a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. The Mediterranean population of the Angelshark (Squatina squatina) is listed on Appendix I & II of the Convention, and as part of the implementation of its Single Species Plan of Action (SSAP Angelshark Med), an International Working Group was established. During this COP, progress on the implementation of the SSAP and its associated working group will be presented, along with proposals for area-based protection measures within the identified Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs). The SSAP WG is also hosting an evening reception on Thursday 26 March at 18:15 in Room 2: Angel Sharks & Friends and presenting our latest results on ISRAs and Angel Sharks at a side event on Friday at 12:45 in Room 2: Ocean Travellers: Using Important Shark and Ray Areas to Deliver Global Targets, organised by @iucnshark

🦈 Exciting news! A new toolkit developed in collaboration with Angel Shark Project , @wwf_mediterranean , and ElasmoProject, is now available to support researchers and conservationists working with angel sharks (Squatinidae). Designed for both field and analytical work, it promotes standardized methods to collect data on population dynamics, life history, bycatch mitigation, and habitat use. By improving consistency across studies, this toolkit helps build stronger, comparable datasets—key to advancing conservation and protecting these unique and threatened species. 🔗 Link in bio 📍 Also available on the ASCN website under “Progress to Date” @museumkoenig @ulpgc_para_ti @officialzsl @lancasteruni @wwf_mediterranean

You can almost notice her staring back This is the same angelshark that I shared the other day, just as she glided past us Most angelsharks will be buried in the sand during the day,and its crucial to never bother a buried angelshark, keeping a good distance from them which makes this encounter that much more special —— Location: Gran Canaria Dive site: Sardina del Norte Log: 14.1 | 51min | 20C Date: December 2025 Buddies: @enrique.casanas #diving #scuba #underwater #uwphotography #ocean

Thanks to the generous support of Shark Conservation Fund, the Angel Shark Project has been able to work over the last three years (2022–2025) to strengthen the protection and conservation of angel sharks. This support has enabled the project to make significant progress in protecting this Critically Endangered species in 7 countries across the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea🌊 Furthermore, SCF will continue to support the project over the next two years (2026–2028), focusing on strengthening protection measures and improving spatial management in two hotspots for these species 🦈 @museumkoenig @ulpgc_para_ti @officialzsl @isea_org @wwf_adria @marinebiologyinlibya @irishelasmobranchs @univcorse

Probably one of the largest angelsharks that I have ever seen and she came right up to us while we were distracted looking at a smaller guy buried in the sand Feeling incredibly lucky that we are a world-wide stronghold for this critically endangered shark Also look at her crazy camouflage —— Location: Gran Canaria Dive site: Sardina del Norte Log: 14.1 | 51min | 20C Date: December 2025 Buddies: @enrique.casanas #diving #scuba #underwater #uwphotography #ocean

🎣🇱🇾 The Angel Shark Project team in Libya is conducting surveys at fish markets along the Libyan coast, an area believed to represent one of the last remaining refuges for angel sharks in the Mediterranean. The aim consists on raising awareness among fishers of the vulnerable status of angel sharks in Libyan waters🦈. 🗣️ After speaking to local fishers, Sarah Al Mabruk shares her thoughts with us You can read the full article here 👉🏼 /update/i-had-no-idea-what-happens-when-fishers-learn-the-truth-about-angel-sharks/

🦈Shark News - April 2026 | IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group The Angel Shark Project and partners contributed: Angelsharks: A Convention of Migratory Species (CMS) Success Story ✍🏼A dedicated Single Species Plan (SSAP) for the Angelshark in the Mediterranean was developed by the CMS Sharks Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Advisory Committee with support from the Angel Shark Conservation Network. The goal of the plan is to strengthen coordination, harmonisation, data collection, conservation, and management efforts for the Angelshark across its Mediterranean range. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽The development of the SSAP did more than produce a conservation blueprint, it actively united Mediterranean Range States. This process represents a powerful example of how science, community, and policy can come together in a diverse region. Angelsharks are serving as an umbrella for international cooperation, driving coordinated action that benefits not only themselves but also other co-occurring species and their habitats. 🌐This collaborative model offers a success model for conservation efforts that could be replicated elsewhere. @iucnshark Read full article 👉🏼 /shark-news.html
