🚨 New Paper | Papur Newydd! Our latest study shows how fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) provides new insights into the Critically Endangered angelshark in Wales. Working together with local fishers, the first tope have been acoustically tagged in Wales to study their movements in the Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (PLAS SAC). 🦈 We would also like to alert water users of the deployment of 20 scientific moorings in PLAS SAC which will track the movements of the tagged tope. 📢 We need your help! Check out our new video celebrating our pilot internship scheme! ✨ Born from conversations regarding the challenges young people face to gaining maritime experience, the aim of the Project SIARC Young Fisher Internship was to work towards addressing barriers and co-create a new opportunity. This pilot was co-designed together with young people, independent fishers, fisher associations and wider environment and maritime sector partners. Collectively it was really important to us all that the internship would give someone a chance to learn from lots of different people and experience the sheer breadth of what it means to work on the Welsh coastline. Lasting 6 months, the internship paid UK living wage, all courses and expenses were covered and equipment was provided. Gyda’n gilydd, roedd yn bwysig iawn bod yr interniaeth yn rhoi cyfle i rywun ddysgu gan lawer o wahanol bobl a phrofi ehangder llwyr yr hyn y mae’n ei olygu i weithio ar arfordir Cymru. Roedd yr interniaeth yn para 6 mis, ac yn talu cyflog byw y DU, talwyd am holl dreuliau’r cyrsiau a darparwyd yr offer. Rydym wrth ein bodd i dderbyn cyllid gan #GronfaRhwydweithiauNatur Llywodraeth Cymru (Rownd 5) ar gyfer Prosiect SIARC! We’re absolutely thrilled to receive funding from Welsh Government #NatureNetworksFund (Round 5) for Project SIARC! This funding will allow us to continue and expand our collaborative work with local communities around Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau SAC over the next 3 years, including: 🎣 Building on fisher integrated research, tagging and tracking key shark species, to better understand their movements and habitat use 🌊 Creating an Ocean Observatory, generating vital environmental and movement data to help understand Wales’ marine protected sites and the species that depend on them 🦈 Co-developing accessible opportunities for people of all ages to discover and develop skills in marine conservation 🤝 Expanding community-led activities that connect people with the marine environment, and amplify local voices We’re excited to continue building a collaborative, community-driven approach, and showcasing and celebrating the incredible shark, skate and ray species off the coast of Wales! 🩵 Find out more about Project SIARC using the links in our bio. .
