My new album, Fox/Coyote is out today and I’m really happy about that. Historically, putting out music makes me want to dig a hole in the ground and just bury myself in it because I feel so exposed. But this time I’m feeling regulated and hopeful. Hopeful that the songs will go where they need to I guess. I never know what songs will resonate most with folks and I’m often surprised by what songs break out. So if you’ve got one on the album that speaks to you let me know in the comments! I hope they’ll be there for you like they’ve already been there for me. So many folks to thank but here we go: @ianmartinallison for the low end @strawberrius on the producing @andywho on keys and producing @dlawonn on guitar and cello @elliottblaufuss on bass and drums and everything! @brian_tighe_songs for the ethereal guitar @allisonlabonne on vocals @pachydermstudios (Thanks Nick!) @mystery_room_mastering @dc.ice for the art @phildesignart for the graphic design @mimefarm for managemnt and calendar wrangling Thanks y’all. Thanks for lending your considerable gifts I owe ya! Thanks as well to @elizabeth_gilbert_writer for my mantra- “Better a trickster than a martyr”

@owamni Thanksgiving at the Thompson’s this year. Thanks to Daphne for the idea and for keeping us (mostly) honest, @the_sioux_chef for the amazing cookbook, and @clanceysmeats for the incredible bison and smoked trout. Making this one meal legit made me subtly reevaluate all sorts of thoughts around ecology, food systems, sustainability, colonization, tradition, thankfulness. I think we may have found ourselves a new tradition…

Is all of this music going to fit into 2.5 hours? Come see the show to find out 🙈 @andywho has a big job when it comes to our collabs with @dessa (and many other artists): arranging all of their music for orchestra 👀 here’s a peek behind the curtain—it all comes together in rehearsal!

When do you know a song has that magic? ✨How do you decide it’s ready for the world? 🌎 And once it’s out, how do you let go and let the audience make it their own? Drop your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear your perspective! ⬇️ This week on Secrets From The Scene, I sat down with Andy Thompson, a producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist who’s built a career working with Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Dan Wilson, Dessa, Jeremy Messersmith, and even orchestras like the Minnesota Orchestra and LA Philharmonic. Andy’s one of those rare musicians who’s made it all work—recording, producing, arranging, and composing—without getting stuck in one lane. Shout out to ever-generous @mothercoyote for the tickets to JT last week at @xcelenergyctr . I rarely (read: basically never) go to shows on that scale, and damn if it wasn’t fun as hell. The musicianship, the choreography, THAT SET. (Plus he played a sweet acoustic version of “Selfish”, which was natch one of my top jams of ‘24)

Ever feel like you’re grinding away in music but not sure how to break into bigger opportunities? This week on Secrets From The Scene, I sat down with @andywho a producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist who’s built a career working with Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Dan Wilson, Dessa, Jeremy Messersmith, and even orchestras like the Minnesota Orchestra and LA Philharmonic. Andy’s one of those rare musicians who’s made it all work—recording, producing, arranging, and composing—without getting stuck in one lane. We talked about: 🎹 His early days bouncing between instruments and figuring out where he fit in music 📞 The hustle of cold calls, networking, and landing big gigs (without feeling sleazy) 🎼 How he got into orchestration and why it’s become such a huge part of his work 💰 The business side of things—how he’s kept his career moving and diversified his income 🤝 Why being easy to work with might be the most underrated skill in music Andy’s journey is proof that there’s no one-size-fits-all path in music—but if you play your cards right, you can build something sustainable and creatively fulfilling. Don’t miss Ep. 63: Orchestrating Success: From Local Gigs to A-List Collabs with Andy Thompson. Check it out wherever you stream your podcasts! Mentioned In This EP: @helvigproductions @danwilsonmusic @dessa @semisonicband @jeremymessersmith @masonjennings @graveyardclub @heiruspecs . . . . . #guitarist #drummer #bassist #vocalist #indiemusician #musicpodcast #mnmusicscene #mplsmusic #mplsmusicscene #minneapolismusic #minneapolismusicscene #mnmusic #recordingstudio #audioengineer #secretsfromthescene

As this gardening season winds down, I was reminded that I forgot to post a bunch of yummy meals we made in 2023. In no particular order, and if something looks good, hit me up—there’s a 50/50 chance I can remember the recipe 😆
