It’s been over a year since I posted any sketchbook stuff at the blog. Which feels crazy. But its not because I stopped drawing random s#%&. Going to dump a bunch of stuff over the next few days/weeks. Here’s a sample of what I put up last night, mainly drawing outfits from @comicartsla 2024.

I’m kind of speechless. So much gratitude: to the people out there reading my work, to the incredibly generous souls who wrote recommendations, to everyone @guggfellows and to @jaxfiles for endless support, encouragement and belief. Making a life drawing pictures and telling stories doesn’t happen without a multitude of friends and supporters. And the alignment of a few stars. So lucky. And yeah… stunned. More massive thanks: @pantheonbooks @aragiauthors @fantagraphics @drawnandquarterly @associationchifoumi @editionsatrabile etc etc

Sorry for the radio silence, folks; life gets in the way, as always. Sometimes I can read a book a day for weeks on end, and other times finishing one a month is a stretch. Thankfully we have a very special book today to write about, one that came SO heavily recommended as people’s “best graphic novel of 2025” that I had to pick it up and dive right in. That book is TONGUES, created solely by @andersbrekhus and published by @pantheonbooks . Let me start off by saying that there is absolutely no question that Tongues is a masterpiece of the medium, and we would be better off if most graphic novels were as beautiful and as creative as Nilsen’s work of art. My god. Every page is innovative and stunning, and I’m forever an Anders Nilsen fan after experiencing this. On the other side of the coin - honestly - what the hell did I just read? There is SO much going on in this re-telling of the Greek myth of Prometheus. Have you ever read a book or watched a movie that was so high level, that it made you feel dumb for having experienced it? Perhaps a Christopher Nolan movie, or a Mark Z. Danielewski book? That’s how Tongues made me feel. Don’t get me wrong; it’s brilliant and gorgeous, but it often left me with more questions than answers, and even the ending made the book feel like an extended prologue. In conclusion - if you love the medium of graphic novels, Tongues is simply an experience. If you get frustrated with stories that make you want to scream “what is happening?!” then perhaps don’t bother. Either way though, I can’t wait to see what Nilsen does next.
