SACRED SPRING (2023) 61 x 100 x 3 cm Calacatta & Verde Alpi marble mosaic, grout, beeswax, PVC Imagery taken from Blasius Weffring’s woodcut frontispiece for Giorgio Agricola’s 1556 treatise De re Metallica (On the Nature of Metals). [For anyone interested, Agricola’s work catalogued and illustrated the techniques of mining, refining and smelting metallic compounds and remained the authoritative text on the practice over 180 years following its publication. It was a key vehicle in the dissemination of metallurgical processes formerly held as a purely oral tradition among technicians and craftspeople. It would prove a catalyst for the development of mass extraction and industrialisation throughout the preceding centuries. Incidentally, the first complete translation of the text from its original Latin into English was completed in 1912 by Herbert and Lou Hoover - who later became President and First Lady of the United States.] More details to follow :)
