Across Lebanon, pregnancy is being experienced amid displacement, fear, and collapsing access to maternal healthcare. At least 12,000 of all forcibly displaced individuals are pregnant women. As services become inaccessible, birth is taking place outside formal healthcare systems. Amelia Hankins and Ghadir Hamadi (@ghadir_hamadi ) look at how pregnant women are navigating displacement and how midwives are carrying expecting mothers through war. The Order of Midwives has created a hotline for pregnant women and new mothers forced to leave their homes because of the war. Just over a month after Israel first targeted a group of journalists in Alma al-Shaab on October 13, 2023 — killing Reuters video journalist Issam Abdallah and seriously injuring AFP’s Christina Assi — Israeli occupation forces again targeted the press, killing two journalists and one media worker reporting from Tayr Harfa for Al Mayadeen TV. A year later, on October 25, 2024, the Israeli military targeted 18 journalists as they slept at a compound in the southeastern Lebanese town of Hasbaya, killing three. Israel’s killing of Al Manar journalist Mohammed Sherri on March 18 marks the 22nd media worker killed since October 2023, part of a pattern that has seen reporters repeatedly targeted across Lebanon. Israeli occupation forces targeted a building in Zuqaq al-Blat that Sherri was in, killing him and his wife, and injuring members of his family. Sherri led Al Manar television’s political programming for a decade, he also served on its Board of Directors. We’re in awe of this stunning botanical illustration by the talented @amychiniara showcasing Iris Cedreti, one of Lebanon’s rarest and most endangered native iris species. Rendered with exquisite detail and scientific precision, Amy’s work beautifully captures the delicate structure of this ecological keystone. The illustration is part of the Archive Box, the book that we developed as a central component of the Lebanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2025, curated by Collective for Architecture Lebanon (CAL). Conceived as a space for documentation, the Archive Box brings together contributions that reflect on environmental loss, displacement, and ecocide.
