Omar Korvalan learnt everything about fabric dyeing 20 years ago. The secret is to keep the eye on the dye throughout the process. The dosage of pigment, the temperature of the water and the time that the fabric is left to soak are key in achieving the desired nuances of colour. The same piece of fabric will take several plunges into scolding hot water, but as soon as the colour looks right it’s a direct flight to a cold rinse to get rid of impurities. The next step is a quick spin in the machine. The splashes of colour that paint the walls are testimony to the years of hard work. Yards and yards of fabric are laid out to dry awaiting satisfied clients to pick them up. To contact Omar Korvalan: ☎️ +961 3 198 056 #TheReadyHand

On a uplifting and rare occasion we enter a workshop bustling with work and customers. Koko’s is such a place. As Garo Der Stepanian, the afore mentioned Koko’s son explains, this is just survival mode. The lucrative work of bygone days are nowhere to be seen for now. Despite this, Garo’s positive energy is contagious. He is clearly a man who loves his work, his black, gritty hands are significant proof. Garo explains that his work is “copy, paste” spare parts for cars or household appliances, gears, industrial parts, anything metal up to 90cm can be bent, smoldered and shaped in this heavy metal environment. Over 70 years of experience means that Koko’s workshop has witnessed decades of mechanical and engineering progress, and thanks to our current situation the habit of mending is back.
